Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon fell by 41.8% between August 2025 and July 2026 and reached the lowest level recorded since measurement began in 1988, the Government reported this Friday.
In total, 3,335 square kilometers of vegetation were destroyed in the largest tropical forest on the planet, according to data from the Prodes satellite system.released by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), which are more precise and detailed than the reports that are released month after month.
This is the fourth consecutive year of reduction in devastation after the 11,504 square kilometers of forests that were destroyed in 2022, the last of the term of former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023).
The result represents a historical minimum in almost four decades of measurements and surpasses the previous record, of 4,571 square kilometers, registered in 2012.
The Government attributed the reduction to deforestation prevention and control policies, which combine satellite surveillance, environmental inspections, territorial protection and incentives for sustainable productive activities.
The Brazilian president, Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silvaset the goal for the country to achieve zero deforestation in the Amazon by 2030.
Since 2023, environmental authorities have carried out 76,095 inspection operations throughout Brazil and imposed 25,101 fines for violations related to deforestation, for a total value of 11,800 million reais ($2,322 million), according to official data.
