The Treasury helps families during the return to school: these are the expenses that you can deduct from your income

This week thousands of Spanish students will return to the classrooms to begin a new school year full of challenges. A new stage that will mean parents face the most expensive return to school in history, with an average of 2,000 euros per year per child, according to the Organization of Consumers and Users. Fortunately, as the Treasury technicians report, these expenses may be deducted in the next Income campaign.

As recalled by the technicians of the Ministry of Finance (Gestha), in some autonomous communities the purchase of books and school supplies for minor children can be deducted in personal income tax up to 100%. Likewise, spending on language academies and daycare centers can also be deducted, the latter with the possibility of accessing an additional aid of 1,000 euros, although it will depend on different factors.

Communities that allow deduction for books and school supplies

Those communities that offer a 100% deduction in the purchase of textbooks and school supplies are Asturias, Aragon, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands, although the percentage will vary depending on the income of the parents and other established limits. For its part, Castilla-La Mancha only offers this tax relief on the books.

In the latter case, a family with two parents whose income is 22,000 euros, once the minimum for descendants has been deducted, who has spent 250 euros on school books for their two children, may deduct a maximum of 75 euros for each of them, that is, 150 euros in the next income tax return.

In the case of Extremadura, it offers a deduction of 15 euros per child. Murcia allows you to deduct up to 120 euros for the purchase of school supplieswhile Madrid applies a 15% deduction on total school expenses. Galicia, for its part, offers a 15% discount for expenses on books and materials, but establishes a maximum of 105 euros per child and a maximum income of 30,000 euros.

Tax relief for extracurricular activities and language academies

On the other hand, families can also deduct the expenses generated by having enrolled their children in extracurricular classes, although the conditions will depend on the region. In Aragón, a 25% deduction is allowed for this type of activities, including support or school reinforcement classes.

While in Andalusia tax relief is offered 15% of annual spending on school educationlanguage academy, computer science or both. Something similar to the case of Madrid, Murcia and the Balearic Islands, which contemplate a 15% tax reduction on language teaching.

For both deductions for school materials and extracurricular activities, it will be necessary to collect tickets, invoices and receipts that prove the expenses that have been incurred throughout the year. In addition, they will be carried out on the parents’ personal income tax, family members or guardians who live with school-aged minors.

You may receive an increase of 1,000 euros for daycare expenses

On the other hand, although public schooling is free up to three years of age, the Treasury understands that there are cases in which it is necessary to use private daycare centers. Therefore, this expense is part of the state deduction for maternity when minors have an age between 0 and 3 years.

This type of tax relief is available in Aragon, Asturias, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, La Rioja and the Valencian Community. Although the percentage It will depend on what is agreed by the autonomous community.

Likewise, having the right to the maternity deduction and having paid custody expenses in daycare centers or early childhood education centers will allow access to an increase in the maximum deduction of 1,000 euros. The amount will cover the cost of pre-registration, registration, attendance during general and extended hours, as well as food, as explained on the Tax Agency’s website.
