The Social security will begin to communicate with workers on sick leave exclusively through its electronic headquarters, although with exceptions.
The Spanish Public Administration is seeking to improve its digitalization and, to this end, starting on the first Tuesday of September 2026, it will begin to carry out its notifications exclusively electronically. A measure that coincides with the reinforcement of surveillance of workers with several sick leave per year.
This change appears developed in the Order ISM/541/2026, of May 27published in the BOE which modifies the previous Order ISM/903/2020 regarding electronic notifications and communications from the Social Security Administration. Specifically, introduces changes in articles 4, 5 and 6 of said order.
There is a period of 10 days to be able to open and read Social Security notifications
As of the entry into force of said modification, this September 1those people who have requested or are receiving benefits for temporary, permanent disability or permanent non-disabling injury will begin to receive all notifications through the mailbox of the Social Security electronic headquarters.
Through this means, the Public Administration will communicate both the denial, extension or recognition of the benefit, as well as the need to provide documentation or summons for medical examinations. In addition, there is a period of 10 days natural from the day of receipt to be able to enter and read the notification. If it is not opened within the established period, the system will consider it read.
According to the regulations themselves, “it is considered that these people, because they are incorporated into the work or professional world in which the possession and use of electronic devices is widespread, They have sufficient knowledge and means to receive communications and notifications by electronic means.. However, certain safeguards are introduced to guarantee that administrative actions reach the recipient.”
Notifications may arrive via email or SMS
To ensure that notifications are read on time, the agency has implemented an alert system. This allows link personal email or phone number with the aim of sending an email or SMS every time you have a new communication pending to be opened in the mailbox of the Social Security electronic headquarters.
