The weather changes this Friday in Spain: AEMET warns of strong storms and much less heat

The arrival of a trough will cause this Friday, August 21, a change in the weather in much of Spainwith strong storms, showers and a general drop in minimum temperatures. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) also foresees episodes of particularly intense rainfall in the Balearic Islands, the Cantabrian coast and, at the end of the day, in Catalonia and the north of Castellón.

During the early morning, the most affected areas will be Balearicswhere strong or very strong storms are expected that could be accompanied by very strong gusts of wind. Locally strong showers will also occur on the Cantabrian coast.

The situation will change throughout the day. In the afternoon, AEMET predicts showers accompanied by a storm in the Aragonese Iberian, Balearic Islands, Barcelona and Girona. Furthermore, during the last hours of Friday, instability in the Mediterranean will increase.

Specifically, the prediction points to strong or very strong and persistent showers on the Catalan coast and the north of Castellón. In the rest of the Peninsula, slightly cloudy or clear skies will dominate, although mists and fog banks could appear in interior areas of the Cantabrian Sea.

Temperatures will drop across the board

One of the main changes planned for this Friday will be the drop in temperatures. The minimums will drop across the board in Spain, while the maximums will also recede in much of the territory.

The decline will be especially pronounced in the Iberian, Castellón and Balearic Islandswhile the maximums will also drop in the northern plateau, the northeast and the Mediterranean area. On the contrary, thermometers will rise in the southwest and will remain without major changes in other areas.

Among the capitals, Murcia will reach 36 degreesthe highest maximum temperature of the day. Alicante will reach 34 degrees, while Albacete, Badajoz, Córdoba, Málaga, Seville and Palma will be around 33.

In the center, Madrid will have a minimum of 19 degrees and a maximum of 30while Toledo will reach 32. In Andalusia, Granada will reach 32 and Jaén 30.

The north will have much milder temperatures. Santander will stay at 23 degreeswith a minimum of 18, while Oviedo will also reach 23 degrees after starting from a minimum of 14. Bilbao will have 24 degrees and San Sebastián 23.

In Galicia, A Coruña will register between 16 and 22 degrees, while Lugo will have a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 23. Ourense will reach 29 degrees.

In the Mediterranean, Barcelona will reach 30 degrees, Girona at 31, Tarragona at 31 and Valencia at 31. In the Balearic Islands, Palma will have a minimum of 24 degrees and a maximum of 33.

Wind and storms will mark the change of weather

The wind will generally be weak and from the west on the Peninsula, although it will blow with greater intensity in some points. On the Cantabrian coast and the Ebro valley it will be moderate, while on the coasts of the Valencian Community and Catalonia easterly winds will predominate.

AEMET also foresees Tramuntana in Empordà and moderate wind from the south in the Balearic Islands. In the Alboran Sea, the west could register strong intervals and very strong gusts of gales are not ruled out in the lower Ebro.

In the Canary Islands, the weather will be different from the rest of the country. The skies will remain cloudy on the northern slope, where light rainfall could occur, while the south will have clear skies. Temperatures will experience few changes and the trade wind will blow moderately.

Thus, Friday will be marked by a generalized decrease in minimum temperatures and an increase in instability in several areasespecially in the Balearic Islands, the Cantabrian Sea and the Mediterranean, where AEMET concentrates the most intense rain and storm episodes.
