The AEMET warns of a prolonged heat episode: how long will it last?

After an unusually cold start to May, the Peninsula is preparing for a “very intense and prolonged” heat episode with tropical nights and maximums of up to 38 degrees. Although the thermometers will register values typical of July, experts technically rule out a heat wave.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has already warned that the coming days will be marked by a suffocating heat which, at some points, has the potential to beat “warm day records for these dates”.

Thermometers shot from north to south

The episode will be characterized mainly because of its “intensity” with temperatures forecast for the whole of Spain “extraordinarily high for the time of year”.

The maximum temperatures will be around 34 degrees in the main valleys of the peninsula, while in areas such as the Guadiana and the Guadalquivir they could reach between 36 and 38 degrees.

The heat will also be significant in the north, where The Cantabrian coast could reach 30 degrees and in inland areas it is not ruled out that 34 degrees will be reached.

During the night, the episode will not let up. The AEMET foresees tropical nightsthose in which temperatures do not drop below 20 degrees, starting on Friday in the Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys, and during the weekend they could also extend to the Tagus valley, the Ebro valley and the lower Duero.

Another relevant point will be the “duration” of the episode. Although there is some uncertainty in the forecast, current models indicate that This anomalous heat could continue at least until the middle of next week.

Despite the intensity and persistence of the episode, the AEMET clarifies that “we cannot speak of a heat wave in the strict sense, since this would require reaching even higher temperatures.” Even so, he emphasizes that both daytime and nighttime temperatures will be “typical of midsummer” in much of the country.

This Thursday A fully summer atmosphere will already be felt, with very high values in the south and the interior of the peninsula. Up to 38 degrees are expected in Badajoz and 37 in Seville.

They will also overcome the 34 degrees in cities like Cáceres, Lleida, Toledo and Zaragoza, while others like Ciudad Real, Jaén, Madrid, Oviedo, Palencia, Valladolid and Ourensethey will be slightly below, with between 32 and 33 degrees.

In the north, the heat will also be striking for the season. Bilbao could reach 34 degrees, while San Sebastián 29 degrees and Santander 26 degreesunusual records in the Cantabrian Sea on these dates.

As for minimum temperatures, 20 degrees are expected in Cádiz, while in Alicante, Almería, Málaga, Ceuta and Melilla they will range between 18 and 19 degrees.
