“It’s amazing to be here”: the “Cherry Blossoms” capture attention to Tokyo

Tokyo – Tourists and premises are marveled on Monday before the cherry trees in Tokyo, an iconic element of the spring landscape of the Japanese capital and that are at the high point of their annual flowering season.

Crowds went to the most prominent places in the city to take photos or organize picnics under the branches overflowing with pink and white flowers, known as “Sakura” in Japanese.

“Honestly, it’s amazing to be here. It’s better than we expected,” Christian Sioting, a Filipino tourist, told AFP.

“It is an ephemeral experience and we are very happy to have been here and witness his flowering,” he added.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) declared Sunday in Tokyo the variety of cherry “submissive”, the most common and popular in the country.

Although this year’s flowering dates are around the average, the JMA states that climate change and urban heat are causing Sakura to bloom approximately 1.2 days before every 10 years.

“Seeing photos is something else, but being here, (see) really the Sakura with your eyes (…) is really amazing,” Ralf NG estimated, who made the trip from Hong Kong.

Yen’s weakness is attracting more visitors than ever to Japan. More than three million foreigners visited Japan in March, an absolute record in a single month for this country, according to data published by the National Tourism Organization (JNTO).
