The Caribbean Astronomy Society (SAC) offered an explanation for the phenomenon observed by many people in the sky during Tuesday night, after receiving reports of two “lights” that appeared and disappeared and that appeared to travel in the same direction.
The organization maintained, in written statements, that what people saw in the sky, between 7:07 and 7:08 pm on Tuesday, was a pair of “military or spy satellites” operated by the United States Navy (US Navy).
“These satellites are in orbit, in pairs, to obtain greater precision when carrying out ‘stereo’ observations, or from two perspectives, of enemy ships. The specific satellites were NOSS-3 and NOSS-4, which were placed in orbit in 2007,” highlighted Eddie Irizarry, SAC scientific communicator.
Irizarry added that the satellites, known as the “Naval Ocean Surveillance System” (NOSS), “have the peculiarity that, being a pair of satellites in orbit at the same altitude, they occasionally cause flashes (flares) simultaneous when reflecting sunlight, which makes them look very curious, since observers perceive two objects that appear at the same time and also disappear simultaneously.
The SAC official maintained that the pair of satellites passed at an altitude of 830 miles over Puerto Rico.
