In tune with the Planet Earth Dayhe Molecular Center of the University of Puerto Rico will hold this coming Monday, April 22, a battery collection event to be recycled.
In the activity, which will take place from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, people will be able park and enter the buildingin Río Piedras, to deliver the batteries, but they will also have the option of a service car to facilitate the collection, indicated the doctor Pearl Akaminespokesperson for the organizing committee.
“We wish to contribute to the issue of conservation and carry out affirmative actions that promote a change in our daily and consumption habits. “This event is an invitation to raise awareness about environmental conservation and sustainability, but also an opportunity to educate us all on the subject.”Akamine said in a press release.
He added that, beyond promoting community action, the activity is a call to mitigate pollution, properly dispose of hazardous waste, reduce toxic waste that enters the landfills and reduce chemicals that could enter groundwater.
Akamine explained that, between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, not only will batteries be collected, but people will be able to orient themselves on this topic with the posters prepared for the occasion. Also, there will be scientists and university students available to share about the research being done at the Molecular Center.
AA, A, C, D and 9 volt batteries – alkaline and zinc-carbon or lithium – will be accepted, as well as button or coin type and rechargeable nickel cadmium (Ni-Cd), lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries. , nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH), nickel-zinc (Ni-Zn) and lead-acid (Pb) small seal.
In the statement, it was explained that the batteries may contain metals harmful to humans and the environment, such as mercury, lead, cadmium, nickel and silver. Some may contain critical minerals, which can be recovered and reused, such as cobalt, lithium and graphite. Additionally, on rare occasions, they cause fires, even if they appear “dead” or discharged.
