These are the new features that OpenAI is preparing for its AI browser ChatGPT Atlas

OpenAI launched this week ChatGPT Atlasyour new browser powered by artificial intelligence. The product makes extensive use of AI with ChatGPT integrated and available at every moment of navigation.

The ChatGPT sidebar can be opened on any web page to help you summarize content or analyze data. Another of its important functions is Agent Modewhich allows AI to interact with websites for you and perform tasks directly. It is also possible to invoke ChatGPT from any text field and the browser has a memory that remembers information between sessions and that further personalizes the user experience as they get to know you.

Despite being accompanied by the most popular chatbot and advanced functions, Atlas still lacks some basic features in any modern browser. For example, does not support user profilesa standard feature to separate personal and work accounts.

The browser also does not allow extensionsso, for example, the most popular password managers will not work. There are also missing tab groups to organize the work and, for now, no cross platform support. Atlas is only available for macOSalthough OpenAI already said that it would take it to Windows, Android and iOS.

As a browser, and despite its new features, it is still a bit in its infancy, but OpenAI has confirmed that it is working to solve its shortcomings. Adam Fryproduct manager at Atlas, has published in short-term priority list and noted that the team has been ‘focused on improving it’ since its launch.

Among the upcoming developments are the multi-profile supportthe tab groupsa optional ad blocker and a model selector in sidebar. Fry indicates that there are more developments, but that some involve third parties and that is why they are not on the list.

The improvements and functions that ChatGPT Atlas will receive

This is the complete list of improvements in development:

  • Text entry fix for Japan and Korea.
  • Support for Wi-Fi captive portals.
  • Multi-profile support.
  • Tab groups.
  • Model selector in the ChatGPT sidebar.
  • Attach multiple tabs in the chat composer and improve the (@mentions) experience.
  • Using projects from the ChatGPT sidebar.
  • Optional ad blocker.
  • Menu with all shortcuts.
  • Dropdown menu for bookmarks (instead of scrolling).
  • Additional confirmation before deleting all chats in the browsing data dialog.
  • Improved suggestion customization.
  • Reduction of the agent’s initial response time.
  • Improved Agent Mode activation.
  • Greater reliability of the agent’s ‘paused’ state.
  • Improved agent ‘reasoning’ animation based on their actions.
  • Better use of Excel in the cloud and Google Drive with the agent.

Fry explains that some will arrive in the coming weeks and others – such as the ad blocker, tab groups and profiles – they will take more time. Among the suggestions that users make it is also that the Agent Mode is more contextualso you know when to offer help, and that the Pinned tabs reopen automatically when restarting the browser. And many demand support for Windows and Android, something that Fry described as ‘critical’, although he acknowledged that they are ‘major efforts’.
