A retrograde storm has brought a significant change in weather to Spain. Over the next few days, we will have a notable episode of heavy rains and stormswhich has already begun in the Mediterranean area, but which will spread throughout the country, according to the forecast of theState Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
The state body has an impact on the anomaly of this storm: The normal movement of the atmosphere at these latitudes is from west to east, however, in this case, the retrograde air mass does it the other way around, from east to west. In the last 24 hours, stormy and intense rainfall has already been recorded on the coasts and pre-coasts of the provinces of Valencia, Castellon and Tarragonawhere they have accumulated very significant amounts of rain. It has also rained, although with less intensity, in the rest of Catalonia, in the Pyrenees, the Balearic Islands and on the southern coast.
Storms move inland
The AEMET has activated this Wednesday rain warnings in four communities in the easternmost part of the peninsula. In areas of the Valencian Community and Cataloniaon orange alert, up to 70 liters per square meter are expected in three or four hours. Castile-La Mancha There is also an alert for rainfall of 15-20 litres per square metre in one hour in areas of the mountain range and Alcarria in Cuenca, Guadalajara, Alcaraz and Segura (Albacete) or in La Mancha in Albacete and Ciudad Real.

Heavy showers in all these areas

Thus, from early hours, they will affect the centre and east and will spread to the southwest, to Melilla, to the south of the northern plateau and to the northeast of the peninsula. In the afternoon, showers are expected across most of the map, with less probability on the southern and western coasts of the Balearic Islands.
They will be locally very strong in the south of Catalonia as well as in the provinces of Castellón and Valenciaand strong in the east and south of the northern plateau, Extremadura, southern plateau, Mediterranean, Iberian system, Pyrenees, Central system, mountain ranges of northern Andalusia and Melilla, without ruling out that they may affect mountains in southern Galicia and other inland areas of Andalusia and Murcia.
Given this situation, the AEMET has activated the yellow warning for rain which will accumulate between 15-30 liters in one hour in the provinces of Barcelona and Tarragona (Catalonia) and in Teruel (Aragon), and in the communities of Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Community of Madrid and Community of Valencia.
