What if they told you that in the middle of the Manzanares river there was a boat -shaped pool? With solarium, restaurant and dance floor. It was Manzanares Island, an leisure complex built in 1931 which became one of the favorite destinations of Madrid high society until it disappeared without a trace.
The story, rescued by the tiktoker @ferromagnetite, known for its informative work on rail and urban curiosities in Madrid, has aroused the interest of thousands of users. His video, clear and documented, removes a sleeping collective memory and rescues one of those forgotten pages of the city, the day when Manzanares housed an artificial oasis of recreation, luxury and modernity.
A natural island converted into urban paradise
Before becoming construction, the place was literally an islanda natural islet in the Cauce del Manzanares, already visible on maps of 1909. On that land it was projected and built in 1931 an unusual structure for the time: an artificial pool shaped like Boat-Crucero, equipped with solarium, restaurant and dance floor. A miniature leisure center, in the center of Madrid.
This “island” was not just an architectural whim. It reflected the spirit of the Second Republic, modernity, social progress, the commitment to popular leisure although in practice and the main public was the Madrid upper class. The design and location made this enclave something unique, almost surrealista pool sailing (or rather anchored) in a river whose flow has been historically modest.
Bombings, overflows and oblivion
However, effervescence lasted little. The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 hit the project fully. A howguard hit the structure, seriously damaging it. Although in later years it was tried to maintain the active space, the successive floods especially that of 1947 ended up sentencing it.
The Manzanares Island closed its doors definitely in 1954 And it was demolished shortly after. Over time, vegetation, cement and the urbanization of the environment erased any visible footprint. Neither a plaque, nor a model, nor a stone is today to remember that unusual urban paradise. Only old maps and oral memory retain their existence.
