The weekend brings about a sudden and unusual change in weather for these dates, in which Spain will experience almost summer-like temperatures in just 24 hours, with values close to 30 degreesto an environment typical of winter, with rain, intense wind and snowfall at relatively low levels, warns the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
Today, the shift towards the south of the low pressures will favor the stabilization of the weather in a large part of the country and the entry of a mass of warm air of Saharan origin, accompanied by haze. This episode will cause a sharp rise in temperatures, which will reach values abnormally high for the time of year.
In most of the country the 28-29 degrees and even 30 degrees in Almería, Ourense, Bilbao, Zaragoza, Toledo, Lleida, Guadalajara, Granada. On the contrary, the coolest day will be recorded in Cádiz, A Coruña and Santander, where the thermometers will not exceed 19 degrees.
However, this situation will be brief. Starting tomorrow, Saturday, the arrival of a cold front active in Galicia will mark a radical change in time. The passing of a polar maritime air mass will cause a widespread thermal collapsea decrease in the snow level and late frosts in many inland areas.
Where is it going to rain
On Saturday, the front will leave rain from west to east throughout the day. Precipitation will be more abundant in the Cantabrian and in mountainous areas of the north and center. In addition, stormy showers are expected in the southern half, which could be locally strong and accompanied by hail.
Looking ahead to Sunday, instability will move towards the east and the Balearic Islands, where the rains could gain intensity before beginning to subside during the day on Monday.
Snow returns: thicknesses of up to 40 cm
The thermal collapse will be accompanied by a sharp drop in the snow level, until it is between 700 and 1,000 meters in the Cantabrian mountain range and the northern Iberian system during the afternoon of Saturday.
On Sunday, snowfall will extend to parts of eastern Castilla y León, the eastern Central system, southern Iberia and the Pyrenees, with significant accumulations in mountain areas that could exceed the 40 centimeters during the episode.
Wind and thermal sensation
The umbrella will not be enough; The wind from the north and northwest will blow strongly, with Cerzo in the Ebro valley and Tramuntana in the northeast. This factor will trigger the sensation of cold, making the perceived temperature much lower than what the thermometers show.
Exceptional drop in temperatures
Temperatures will drop very sharply over the weekend, with drops of up to 15-20 degrees in just 48 hours in some capitals northern. In the country as a whole, the values will be well below what is usual for these dates.
During Saturday, cities like lugo will go from touching 30 degrees on Friday to not reaching 15 degreesa fall that will be repeated in capitals such as Pamplona either Burgos.
This day will also highlight the decrease in minimum temperatures, especially in the interior and north of the peninsula, where capitals such as Ávila, Burgos, Guadalajara, León, Logroño, Lugo, Oviedo or Soria will register very low values for the time, between 2 and 4 degrees.
On Sunday temperatures will continue to drop more sharply in the east of the peninsula and in the Balearic Islands. In Burgos, Segovia or Teruel the maximums will barely reach 9 or 10 degreesa winter scene after the summer atmosphere of just two days before.
These temperatures will be accompanied by frosts, not intense but late, in areas of the northern plateau and mountainous areas, which could affect some crops.
How long will this short-lived winter last?
Starting on Monday, the AEMET predicts a progressive recovery of stable weather with the entry of a milder Atlantic mass. Temperatures will begin a gradual rise until returning to normal values first and then above average starting in the second half of the week.
