Starting tomorrow, Wednesday, the arrival of an arctic air mass in the north of the peninsula will cause a marked and general decrease in temperatures, leading to abundant snowfall and at low levels mainly in the Cantabrian area
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated alerts for tomorrow, Wednesday, for accumulations of up to 20 cm of snow in 24 hours above 1,000 meters on the north face of the Cordillera and in Picos de Europa, and a yellow one on the south face and the Cantabrian coast of León, of up to 15 cm in 24 hours, also above 1,000 m, reports Meteored.
For Thursday’s day, Meteorology already has activated 11 warnings for snowfall in these areass: Ibérica Rioja, Ibérica de Burgos, north of Burgos, Cantabrian Mountains of Burgos, Cantabria del Ebro, Liébana, Center and valley of Villaverde (Cantabria), Cantabrian Mountains of Palencia, Picos de Europa (Asturias), southwest of Asturias and Cantabrian Mountains of León.
Thus, snow will be the protagonist in the northern third, where the level will drop to 400–600 meters. In the Cantabrian Mountains, between 20 and 40 centimeters of snow could accumulate throughout the episode. Other mountains in the northern half will also receive snowfall, although weaker.
Snowfall alert phase activated
The Government delegate in Castilla y León, Nicanor Sen, has reported that the alert phase by how the snowfall that is expected starting tomorrow at roads in the Cantabrian area of León, and from Thursday to the same area of Palencia and the province of Burgos.
Specifically, in the Cantabrian region of Leon, the alert will start at six in the afternoon tomorrow with those 20 centimeters of thickness accumulated starting at midnight.
In the Cantabrian region of Palencia, that of Burgos and the Iberian region of Burgos, the alert begins tomorrow at midnight; and in the Burgos county of Treviño and the Meseta and the north of Burgos at six in the afternoon on Thursday. In all cases, the end date of the snow episode does not have a specific time at the moment.
For its part, the Basque Government’s Emergency Management and Meteorology Directorate will activate the yellow warning for risk of snow below 1,000 meters.
According to forecasts, the snow level will be around 800-1,000 meters at dawn, dropping to 600-800 meters at midday and 500-700 meters at night.
Weak to moderate showers are expected, very abundant on the Cantabrian slope, with the probability of storms and hail on the Cantabrian slope during the second half of the day. Thicknesses of 10-30 centimeters at 1,000 meters, 1-6 centimeters at 600 meters and 0 centimeters at 200 meters are expected.
Aena activates its ‘Winter Plan’
On the other hand, Aena has activated its winter action plan against ice and snow contingencies in 21 airports in the network with the highest risk of suffering adverse weather conditions. As Aena explained this Tuesday in a statement, the so-called ‘Winter Plan’ has been active since November 1 and establishes the procedures that airports must follow to minimize the impact of ice and snow.
Both Aena personnel and other agents involved participate in this operational plan, including airlines and handling agents (ground assistance); And for its execution, the airport manager has 200 vehicles for the removal of snow and ice, 500 tons of solid flux and 420,000 liters of liquid flux.
The airports included in the plan are: Albacete, Asturias, Barcelona-El Prat, Bilbao, Burgos, Girona, Granada-Jaén, Huesca, León, Logroño, Madrid-Barajas, Madrid-Cuatro Vientos, Palma de Mallorca, Pamplona, Salamanca, San Sebastián, Santander, Santiago, Valladolid, Vitoria and Zaragoza.
