Smart home solutions as a weapon to establish population and provide security to our elderly

The Valladolid town of Villanubla already boasts «Digital Home», a space that shows how digital transformation can improve people’s daily lives through intelligent solutions applied to the interior of a home.

The president of the Provincial Council of Valladolid, Conrado Iscar, and the Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation, Luis Enrique Ortega, They participated this Thursday together with the provincial deputy, David Stephenand the mayor of Villanubla, Pablo Miranda, in the launch of the “Digital Home” Demonstration Center that wants to become a national benchmark for rural innovation, home automation and intelligent telecare to improve the quality of life and care of older people living in rural areas.

In fact, among its main characteristics is the ability to test and experiment with technological solutions applied to homes that allow the elderly to live in their homes independently for longer. From temperature and humidity control systems to senior assistance tools or remote monitoring.

It also incorporates tools focused on well-being and leisure, such as smart TVs, virtual reality glasses and health monitoring devices, including smart watches and rings that monitor parameters such as heart rate or detect falls. Mayors, technicians and companies have the possibility of analyzing in this space whether these tools work or not before taking them to their towns.

«We are faced with an essential tool that will help establish population, since it helps our elderly and their caregivers to be able to continue living in their homes with dignity, independently and, above all, safely.”highlighted Íscar, who also pointed out that the center will serve as a training space and as an opportunity to generate new business initiatives linked to smart technologies.

For his part, Ortega highlighted the importance of training in digital skills so that people can take advantage of all the opportunities that these tools offer. In this sense, he recalled that the Board promotes the CyL Digital network, which offers free training in digital skills both in provincial capitals and in rural areas.

The mayor of the town, Pablo Miranda, argued that Villanubla aspires to become a model of how a community can preserve its roots while embracing the future.

Attendees participated in a guided tour of the facilities to learn first-hand about the devices and applications integrated into the new Digital Home. CARTIF researcher and project leader, Raul Gomezexplained how the different devices installed can help improve security, energy efficiency, communication and health within the home. The space will remain open to the public and will also host courses, workshops and training activities aimed at people of all ages.

Throughout the tour, technological solutions were shown such as smart locks, digital peepholes, smoke sensors, water leaks and presence detectors, all of them connected to a home automation system that allows you to control the home from your mobile phone. In addition, practical demonstrations were carried out with virtual assistants and robots such as Temi, capable of interacting with users and moving around the home to offer support in daily tasks.
