Shark CryoGlow: the most natural skin science put to the test

Winter has a very particular way of leaving its mark on the face. The cold outside, low humidity and indoor heating can alter the skin barrier, promote dryness and increase the sensation of tightness. The skin is not a passive surface: it is a biological boundary that must maintain its balance in the face of environmental changes. And in this task, technology is beginning to occupy an increasingly visible place. The Shark CryoGlow is one of those proposals that combines science, design and personal care in a device that, at first glance, looks like something out of a science fiction movie.

SharkNinja’s mask It integrates 160 triple-source LED emitters, which generate 480 points of light, with three wavelengths: blue of 415 nanometers, red of 630 and infrared light of 830 nanometers. The combination is not a simple game of colors. Each wavelength interacts differently with tissues, and photobiomodulation (the use of low-intensity light to stimulate biological responses) is the principle that underpins much of the technology.

Blue light is used in acne treatments for its ability to act upon Cutibacterium acnesa bacteria involved in the development of inflammatory lesions. It is what acts in the superficial region of the skin. Red and infrared light (they act in the middle and deepest layers), for their part, are studied for their effects on inflammation and cellular processes related to the repair and appearance of the skin. In this field, research has advanced, although results depend on the wavelength, dose, potency and regularity of treatment. Not all LED masks offer the same effectiveness nor are the results universal.

CryoGlow organizes this technology into four routines. Better Aging combines red and infrared light for six minutes and is aimed at improving the appearance of fine lines, texture and redness. Blemish Repair uses a sequence of blue, infrared and red light for eight minutes, designed for blemishes and acne. Skin Sustain, four minutes, seeks to maintain results after a treatment cycle. The fourth option, Under-Eye Revive, dispenses with phototherapy and focuses on the eye area.

It is precisely there where the feature that gives its name to the device appears. InstaChill incorporates cooling pads under the eyes, with three adjustable levels. The system uses the Peltier thermoelectric effect: When current flows through certain materials, one side cools while the other heats up. A fan evacuates that heat to keep the surface cool. The result is a localized application that can be used for five to fifteen minutes, even while running an LED routine. That and a sensation of metallic cold that relaxes once we stop being surprised.

Cold has a different utility than light. It can provide a feeling of relief and help temporarily reduce swelling around the eyes, especially in the morning. It should not be confused with a therapy that repairs the skin barrier or with a solution for dark circles of pigment origin. Its effect is more immediate and sensory; that of phototherapy, if it appears, requires a sustained routine.

The arrival of cold weather offers a timely context to talk about skin care. A study published in Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology concluded that low temperatures and reduced humidity can weaken the skin’s barrier function and increase sensitivity to irritants. Heating also contributes to creating dry environments. This does not mean that an LED mask replaces a moisturizer, to products with ceramides or protection against the wind: they are different tools, which respond to different needs.

In the design, Shark has sought to move away from the appearance of office equipment. The CryoGlow comes in shades such as lilac, blue and pink, a detail that may seem minor, but which introduces a customization component to a product that is usually rigid, bulky and visually intimidating. The structure leaves space between the mask and the face, and the adjustable straps allow you to adapt it. The remote control with LCD screen selects the programs and controls the session. The trade-off is that the device is not as light or discreet as a flexible mask, and The cable that connects the mask to the controller somewhat limits freedom of movement.

The tests we have carried out (man and woman, at home) provide much more than the anecdotal and the humor of entering the dark and seeing a face illuminated in red behind a mask or a violet profile that hides a gaze concentrated in a revitalizing cold. And it is that the refreshing effect is perceived from the first momentwhile the changes associated with LED light take more time. I confess that I have not noticed many changes linked to acne, nor did I have much there: there were no marks from adolescence, a stage that was left behind long ago. Of course, the texture and the typical redness of low temperatures or changes in environment are noticeable. I confess that nor I have rejuvenated, but I no longer notice tightness in the skin and it looks more… clean so to speakless contaminated by the environment or meteorology. Of course, I don’t know if it is possible, but when using it I was wondering if there is the possibility of considering the possibility of a program for men with beards for future masks. Or maybe it’s too specific.

The CryoGlow has certification as a medical device in the European Union for the functions contemplated in its evaluation. This provides regulatory support, but does not mean that it replaces a dermatologist. It is advisable to follow the instructions, avoid accumulating different LED routines on the same day and ask if there are skin diseases, photosensitivity or treatments that may increase sensitivity to light. It is not a toy and for this reason it has obtained a health certification and should be treated as such.

What’s interesting is that the SharkNinja mask doesn’t make skincare a one-button affair. Its appeal lies in bringing together two different approaches in the same device: photobiomodulation, which requires patience and regularity (we will not see results after two days of use), and localized cooling, which offers a more immediate response. In winter, when the skin demands very different attention than in summer, this combination can transform a few minutes of routine into a small technological ritual.
