Vatican City – He Pope Francis has warned of the effect that the Artificial Intelligence (AI) in “the growing crisis of truth” that exists in society, in a message sent to the World Economic Forum held in Davos (Switzerland).
In the text, published this Thursday, Francis points out that AI “raises great concerns about its impact on the role of humanity in the world.” since “the results it is capable of achieving are almost indistinguishable from those of humans, raising questions about its effect on the growing crisis of truth in the public forum.”
The pontiff highlighted that “this technology is designed to learn and make certain decisions autonomously, adapting to new situations and providing responses not anticipated by its programmers.”
This, he adds, “raises important questions related to ethical responsibility, human security and the broader implications of such advances for society.”
The pontiff adds that “like all human activity and all technological development, AI must be ordered to the human person and be part of the efforts to achieve greater justice.”
Furthermore, it warns of the danger of using AI to promote the “technocratic paradigm”, according to “which all the world’s problems can be solved only with technological means”.
And he emphasizes that “in this paradigm, human dignity and brotherhood are often subordinated to the pursuit of efficiency, as if reality, goodness and truth intrinsically emanate from technological and economic power.”
“However, human dignity should never be violated in favor of efficiency,” he highlights, noting that “technological advances that do not improve the lives of everyone, but rather create or increase inequalities and conflicts, cannot be defined as true progress.” ”.
In his message, Francis also advocates for governments and companies to exercise “due diligence and vigilance” to manage the complexities of AI.
“Individual users, families, civil society, companies, institutions, governments and international organizations have to work at their own level to ensure that AI is for the good of all,” he concludes.
