Naturgy boosts its investment to reach 48% renewables in 2025

Renewable energies are currently a fundamental pillar in the fight against climate change, as they do not produce greenhouse gases. Aware of this, Naturgy has a business strategy based on promoting these facilities. Between 2018 and 2024, the company has put 3.4 GW of renewable capacity into service and has 0.5 GW in the energization process in Australia, and 1.6 GW under construction in Spain, the US and Australia. In turn, for 2025 its Sustainability Plan includes a renewable installed power target of close to 48%. Currently, Naturgy has 6.9 GW of generation capacity internationally, 5.3 GW of which in Spain. Of them, wind energy accounts for half of the installed capacity; solar has an installed capacity of 1.3 GW distributed between Brazil, Chile, the US and Spain, and hydro has a capacity of 2.2 GW, distributed among 2.1 GW in Spain and 0.1 GW in Costa Rica and Panama.

The 5.3 GW in operation in Spain includes the 422 MW resulting from the purchase from Ardian of 12 wind farms in Andalusia, Castilla la Mancha, Castilla León, Catalonia and Galicia. In addition, 17 projects totaling 0.9GW of additional photovoltaic and wind power are currently under construction. Among these projects, the construction of Naturgy’s largest photovoltaic installation in Spain stands out. With 295 MW of peak power, the new plant, located in Extremadura, has an area of 290 hectares and will produce around 530 GWh/year of energy. Through this project, more than a thousand direct and indirect jobs will be created and more than 175 million euros will be invested. On the other hand, in Castilla-La Mancha, the company has started the construction of three new photovoltaic plants that represent an investment that exceeds 110 million euros and will produce around 310 GWh per year. Another relevant milestone is the inauguration of five new photovoltaic plants in 2024 in Gran Canaria, which brings the Group’s renewable power in the region to 137 MW. This amount represents a production capacity of about 380 GWh per year.

Equally relevant is the construction of three new photovoltaic plants located in Jaén with the aim of generating a peak power of 94 MW and producing 180 GWh of energy annually. Also in Andalusia, the company’s first photovoltaic plant stands out in the province of Seville, with 53 MW of power.

Australia and the USA

Outside of Spain, Naturgy also has significant renewable power in operation, with Australia and the United States being the priority development countries. It has been present in Australia since 2007 through its subsidiary Global Power Generation (GPG) and develops wind, solar photovoltaic and storage systems. It currently has a portfolio of projects under development that reaches 1.9 GW.

In the US, it continues with its growth plan launched in 2021, after the purchase of a portfolio of projects under development with a total power of 3.2 GW of photovoltaics and 2 GW of storage.
