Midjourney moves from creating images with AI to developing a body scanner without radiation or magnetic fields

Midjourneythe company known for its artificial intelligence image generator, has presented its first hardware product. It is not a camera or a device for creative purposes, but an ultrasound-based full body scanner. The project is called The Midjourney Scanner and is part of Midjourney Medicala division with which the company wants to enter the field of preventive health.

The announcement was made David HoltzCEO of Midjourney, during a presentation event held in San Francisco and broadcast live. Holz acknowledged that the project is quite far from the ‘cat images’ that popularized the company’s AI tool, but defended that the scanner could reach to offer quality comparable to that of an MRI in many aspects.

The system uses a ring of ultrasonic sensors around the body while the person descends on a platform into the water. Thus, the device obtains layered images of the inside of the body and then reconstructs a three-dimensional representation of what is inside. In the first phase, Midjourney wants to analyze the composition of muscles, fat, bones and organs. The initial idea is not to diagnose diseases, but create body composition maps.

Midjourney ensures that the scan takes about 60 seconds. The process does not use radiation or strong magnetic fieldstwo of the elements that differentiate this proposal from technologies such as X-rays or magnetic resonance imaging. The development has been carried out together with Butterfly Network, a company specialized in ultrasound that provides imaging modules based on its ‘Ultrasound-on-Chip’ technology.

Midjourney herself describes the experience this way. ‘It all begins when you enter a shallow pool of golden light. Then you begin to descend into the water. Your body passes through a ring of underwater sensors, each of which acts like a dolphin, using its echolocation. The sensors send ultrasonic sound waves through your body from all angles. With enough waves and enough angles, we form an image of what is happening inside your body‘.

Holz explained that one of the applications that interests him is checking how the body changes based on diet or training. ‘I’m still not the most measured man on Earth, you know, but I might want to have that daily measurable information,’ he said during the presentation.

Midjourney’s plan is to install 10 scanners in the future Midjourney Spa located in Union Square, San Francisco. The opening is planned before the end of 2027. The location would combine scanning rooms with a gym, saunas and cold baths, which fits with the idea of ​​turning the process into a wellness experience rather than a conventional medical test.

The company admits that the most ambitious medical applications will require FDA authorizationsthe United States health regulator. For now, Midjourney Medical focuses on body composition maps, that do not require the same level of approval as images used for diagnosis. It also states that users will be able to share your scan library with doctors, AI health tools or other people.

Midjourney’s jump is striking because the relationship between its imaging technology and this medical scanner is not entirely clear. Beyond intensive computing use, the company has not explained in detail what role its AI will have in the analysis of the images. Holz envisions a future in which these scans are quick, frequent, and potentially superior to an MRI in some uses. That promise, for now, remains to be demonstrated.
