Lucía Etxebarria has caused a crossroads of opinions in X with her assessment of Maricarmen’s evictionthe 87-year-old woman who this Wednesday had to leave the house in Madrid where she had lived since 1956. The writer has focused her message on the conditions of the old rental and on the time that the family has remained in the property.
“Mari Carmen has had 70 years to save a lot of money because she has been paying rent as a joke,” he wrote. The statement is part of an extensive publication in which he questions whether the tenant and her family members are considered victims of the conflict with the property.
“They have been privileged for seven decades, which is said soon,” says Etxebarria. Her message has elicited responses favorable to her position and others that reject her arguments, especially the comparison between the rent that Maricarmen paid and the price that the author attributes to that home in the market.
The words of Lucía Etxebarria about the rental of Maricarmen
The writer begins her publication with the intention of explaining the case and reviews the continuity of the family contract. From there, he argues that Maricarmen enjoyed especially advantageous economic conditions. According to his assessment, he paid 500 euros for an apartment whose rent would be “2,500 at least.”
Etxebarria also maintains that the previous owner lost money and presents the sale of the property to a fund as a consequence of that situation. The publication does not provide documentation about the owner’s accounts or Maricarmen’s savings or economic capacity..
In another passage, the author refers to a cousin’s offer to take her in and questions her desire to remain in the home. “She wants to live in “her house.” But that house was not hers,” he writes.
The writer expresses that she regrets the situation of an 87-year-old woman, but directs her criticism at the legislation and the Government. In his opinion, the difficulties faced by small owners encourage properties to end up in the hands of investment funds.
Supports and criticisms of your publication
Among the responses there are users who support their interpretation and consider it necessary to distinguish Maricarmen’s personal situation from the conflict over the contract. Others question his conclusions. “Normal rent 2,500?”, replies a user to the price that Etxebarria uses as a reference.
The message has also received personal disqualifications against the writer. The discussion occurred while neighbors and housing groups denounced the eviction and demanded a solution for Maricarmen, who has been transferred to the Gregorio Marañón Hospital after leaving the property on a stretcher.
The conflict over a contract signed in 1956
The rental of the house on Alcalde Sainz de Baranda Street was signed by Maricarmen’s father. After his death, the contract passed to his wife and, when she died in 2008, to his daughter. The judicial dispute focused on the continuity of that second subrogation, which the property considered extinguished.
His lawyer, Beatriz Duro, has insisted that Maricarmen never stopped paying the rent. The defense has also explained that it tried to negotiate a postponement of the launch and that an anonymous donor offered to cover the difference between the rent the woman paid and the amount requested for the property. According to his legal representation, the proposals were rejected.
The eviction was carried out on the fourth attempt, after neighbors and members of the Madrid Tenants Union spent the night in front of the building. Maricarmen leaves a home where she has spent most of her life and where she took care of her parents.
Her cousin Vicente, who traveled from Segovia to accompany her, has offered to take her in when she leaves the hospital. The option of a residence in Pacífico has also been considered, to which she has expressed that she does not want to move. His fate after discharge remains to be determined.
