Hornet 1: this is how the Spanish Navy’s new interceptor designed to hunt drones works

There was a time when the defense strategy was based on a shield. It could be one against a sword, against spears… It could be a wall, a moat… anything that made the arrival of projectiles or troops difficult, served this purpose. As technology advanced, the shield simply became larger, stronger, or both. But there came a point when it was no longer enough: the shield was increasingly difficult to build, more expensive, while the projectiles became more effective and economical.

Today, A drone capable of destroying a battle tank can cost less than a family car. And shooting it down with a missile costing hundreds of thousands of euros is simply unsustainable.

That is why the Spanish Navy has begun testing a new class of weapon: the Hornet, an interceptor developed by the European company Destinus and designed specifically to destroy drones and other low-cost aerial threats. The recent tests carried out from the frigate Saint Mary show that the system could also operate from warshipsexpanding the fleet’s defensive capabilities.

The interesting thing is that, although from afar it may look like a missile, the Hornet belongs to a different category: it is a hybrid between a drone and a missile. Traditional missiles are single-use weapons. They launch, chase their target and explode. The Hornet, on the other hand, shares characteristics with the interceptor drones that are transforming modern battlefields. Your mission is to take off quickly, locate a threat and neutralize it before it reaches its target. It is designed to take on reconnaissance drones, kamikaze drones, loitering munitions and even helicopters or low-flying aircraft.

Destinus describes it as a solution to fill the gap between very short-range anti-aircraft systems and conventional air defense systems. It can carry a load of up to 3 kilos and has a range of approximately 150 km. In other words: a specialized tool for a threat that just a few years ago practically did not exist.

The logic behind the Hornet is easy to understand. Let’s imagine an attack drone that costs a few thousand euros. If to shoot it down it is necessary to fire a missile worth hundreds of thousands or even millions of euros, the attacker can win simply by saturating defenses with large quantities of cheap gadgets. It is exactly the problem that many armies are facing today. That is why new solutions have emerged based on interceptors that are cheaper, reusable or produced in large quantities.

The Hornet is part of this new generation of systems designed to return economic balance to air defense. Another important feature is that it has not been designed to destroy a single high-value target, but to deal with multiple attacks. The so-called “swarms” of drones represent one of the greatest current military challenges. Dozens of small aircraft can approach simultaneously from different directions, forcing defenses to react in a matter of seconds.

According to the information provided by Destinus, the Hornet has been developed precisely to respond to this scenario, offering a scalable solution against massive, low-cost threats. It is a “radar-guided interceptor for subsonic threats with autonomous terminal interception. It has initial guidance with radar, terminal guidance with AI-assisted seeker, operates in environments with GNSS denied and manages to reverse the cost asymmetry.”

The tests carried out from the Spanish frigate are especially relevant because they show that the technology can be integrated into naval platforms. Modern ships are increasingly vulnerable to surveillance drones, suicide drones and unmanned vessels. In recent conflicts, these threats have proven capable of damaging or even sinking ships far more expensive than themselves.

What we’re seeing with the Hornet is part of a much broader transformation. For much of the 20th century, air superiority depended on increasingly faster and more sophisticated fighters. In the 21st century, An increasing part of that battle is being fought between unmanned machines. Drones are no longer just observation platforms. They are weapons. And, like any weapon, they have forced the development of their own predators.

The Hornet is one of them: a kind of “electronic wasp” (play on words with its name) designed to hunt swarms of drones in mid-flight. If the tests continue to be successful, it could become one of the tools with which Spain and other European countries try to respond to an increasingly evident reality: in modern warfare, the sky no longer belongs only to airplanes.
