The last branch of the historical Ponce Ceiba fell this Monday, thus marking the final chapter of one of the most important natural and cultural symbols of the Stately City.
The mayor of Ponce, Marlese Sifrereacted to the event with a message published on his social networksin which he highlighted the historical value of the tree and stated that its legacy will remain as part of the municipality’s identity.
“The Ceiba was not simply a tree. It was an immense symbol of our identity; a silent witness to the passage of time, the growth of Ponce and the lives of thousands of generations who found in it a meeting point, inspiration and belonging”said the municipal leader.
Sifre highlighted that, under the shade of the tree, family memories were built and the sense of belonging of the people of Ponce was strengthened, while highlighting its influence on artists, writers and poets.
“Like every living being, the Ceiba completed its cycle. And although saying goodbye to this icon fills our hearts with nostalgia, it also leaves us a great lesson: life always calls us to renew ourselves, to evolve and to continue building”he added.
Without going into further details, the municipal executive assured that the municipality will be responsible for honoring the memory of the tree and preserving its legacy for future generations.
It was thought that the emblematic tree, located in the Ceiba Parkin the San Antón sector, had been in existence for more than five centuries. Likewise, he was a figure linked to the cultural history of the city.

However, for years, the specimen faced a process of deterioration. In 2011 it lost a significant part of its crown and environmental authorities then estimated that only a portion of the tree remained alive. His condition continued to worsen until In October 2021 his death was confirmedafter centuries of permanence as one of the main symbols of Ponce.
La Ceiba was also associated with the city’s artistic legacy. His image was captured by the Puerto Rican painter Francisco Oller and became a recurring reference in poems, writings and stories about Ponce.
