Given the worrying situation caused by drug trafficking in the south of Spain, the Ministry of the Interior has authorized the V Special Security Plan for the Campo de Gibraltar with the objective of reinforce the presence of the National Police and the Civil Guard in the area. To do this, the ministry will allocate 18.8 million euros in 2026, which can be expanded in 2027 if necessary.
This plan arises before the overflow suffered by the State Security Forces and Corps that are in Campo de Gibraltar due to the rise of international drug trafficking gangs. This situation, common in the bay of Algeciras, has been spreading to different areas, including the mouth of the Guadalquivir, Huelva and even Morocco.
The budget established by the ministry was expanded to 38.2 million eurosthat is, 1.3 million more than the previous year. However, this figure is not enough for some police unions, according to “Infodefensa.” Of this amount, 18.8 million will be allocated to improving the workforce and 19.4 million to expand weapons capacity of the State Forces assigned to the Campo de Gibraltar.
To achieve this goal, Fernando Grande-Marlaska’s department has agreed, through emergency means, at least eight contracts with a value greater than 2.1 million so that the State Forces are able to carry out a “war” against the drug trafficking gangs that operate in the area, in which at least six agents have already lost their lives.
New tactical rifles and top-level bulletproof vests
Among the weapons chosen to equip the National Police and Civil Guard stationed in Campo de Gibraltar, the following stand out: new models of tactical rifles. These weapons are essential for the fight against drug trafficking, not only because of their precision and lethality in confrontationsbut also for being part of the agents’ self-protection. According to “Infodefensa”, the budget allocated for this would be 496,003 euros and the file was awarded to the company Bocum Company Group SL for 157,300 euros.
This company is characterized by being the main distributor of the American company Daniel Defenseso the aforementioned media is betting that the model chosen to arm the National Police will be the DDM4 V7s. This is a type of semi-automatic assault rifle whose production is intended for military, police and civilian uses, within the relevant legislation. According to the manufacturer’s website, this weapon has a unit cost of $2,051 (1,751.41 euros) and is characterized by its lightness and precision.
Among its specifications, its barrel, 11.5 inches (29.21 centimeters) and its carbine-length gas system, which reduces perceived recoil. This system bases its operation on direct gas intake, which gives it greater lightness and simplicity in design, achieving a weight of 5.8 pounds (2.63 kilograms). This weapon, added to the renewal of helmets and top-level ballistic plates for bulletproof vestswould greatly reinforce the offensive and defensive capacity of the agents.
Creation of an electromagnetic and optical barrier that improves the location of drug boats
However, these will not be the only news. The ministry has also agreed with the Spanish company Escribano Mechanical & Engineering SL to improvement of surveillance systems of the Civil Guard. To do this, the company will be in charge of the installation and supply of an optronic sound station at the Cabo de Gata postthanks to a contract of 2,135,650 euros. This station will be accompanied by different High precision radar sensors located in the San Telmo Lighthouse and Adra Lighthousewith the aim of creating an electromagnetic and optical barrier that will improve the location of drug boats before they reach the coast of Almería.
They will join this virtual wall 66 drones produced by ACRE Topographical Solutionsthanks to an agreement valued at almost 350,000 euros. The objective of these drones is to carry out complete surveillance of the terrain, carrying out 3D topographical sweeps and locating possible hideouts or caches of drug traffickers during the day. While, at night, the company Night Vision Laser Spain SL will grant 31 night vision binoculars and thermal scopesfor a value of 457,380 euros. In addition, the National Police will receive 19 monoculars from Comercial El Calden, for 41,668 euros.
New vehicles to guarantee the safety and success of agents during assault and boarding operations
Likewise, to improve the capacity of the Special Operations Group (GEO) and ensure their safety during assault and boarding operations, the ministry reached an agreement with Veblinter SA and acquired four armored off-road vehicles valued at 768,677 euros. The main objective of these vehicles is for agents to be able to confront the ambush techniques carried out by some drug trafficking gangs on land. While, at sea, the GEO will have two new patrol vessels thanks to the company Aister, valued at 785,000 euros.
According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, from July 2018 to December 31, 2025, 47,862 police operations in Campo de Gibraltarin which 31,335 suspects were arrested and 2,179,973 kilograms of drugs. Among this, 1,802,748 kg of hashish, 187,996 of cocaine and 189,230 of marijuana stood out. In addition, 3,183 firearms, 124,441,726 euros and 9,728 vehicles were also seized.
For this reason, in the presentation of the plan, the Ministry of the Interior declared on its website that the objective of the new police strategy was intensify operations of the high seas, control the river routes of introduction of narcotic substances and reinforce “the self-protection measures of the agents during police interventions.
