Do you feel that you fall as you fall asleep? This is hypnagogical myoclonic shaking syndrome

Scientists seem to agree that Sleeping between 7 and 8 hours causes benefits for our health. An insufficient dream produces adverse effects on our body and can lead to diseases such as imbalances in metabolism, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cognitive deterioration and greater risk of mortality.

In our country, in general, little bad sleeps. According to a study, The Spaniards sleep an average 6 hours and 56 minutes, below 7 or 8 recommended by doctors.

Also a study carried out by Flex’s Dream Research Center reveals that 41% of Spaniards wake up with a feeling of not having rested well. As for gender, 63% of men wake up with a feeling of rest compared to 54% of women. This data may be due to the fact that, according to a study by the University of Duke, women need to sleep more than men because their multi-activity makes their brain more tired and needs more time to recover. In addition, there is a big gender difference when it comes to snoring, since 60% of men claim to snore compared to 37% of women.

The three basic sleeping rules are: maintain a regularity at the schedules, that is, try to get up and sleep at the same time; establish some routines and do the same before going to bed every day; and exercise and follow a diet properly before going to sleep.

Why we wake up startled

However, sometimes we wake up without an apparent reason. In many cases, This happens when we begin to reconcile the dream and feel that we fall into an abrupt way.

This sensation is called SHypnagogical myoclonic shaking or sleeping syndrome and is closely related to the transition between vigil and sleep.

A myoclonian is a brief and involuntary spasmodic movement, such as the hypo, and hypnagogical refers to the state immediately prior to sleep, that is, when we begin to fall asleep.

As explained from the Somno clinic, This feeling of fall or shock occurs in the hypnagogical stage or period just before falling asleep. During that moment, the brain and muscles are in a state of gradual relaxation, and that is when these shakes can occur, which are caused by involuntary, abrupt and brief movements, more or less intense depending on which muscles affect.

Sleep quality

Although the Sleeping syndrome is not usually harmful to the organism, they can significantly affect sleep quality.

The sudden awakening that often accompanies this disorder can interrupt the sleep cycle and make it more difficult to reconcile sleep again. If they are very frequent they can cause insomnia and throughout the time it can contribute to broader health problems, such as chronic fatigue, concentration difficulties and greater risk of diseases.

In case this feeling of fall is very frequent or very intense, it is recommended to consult with a sleep expert doctor to rule out other causes.
