Jannik Sinner sealed his pass to Wimbledon’s semifinals after imposing Ben Shelton in three runs (7-6, 6-4, 6-4). The Italian, number one in the world, resolved the game quickly, signing his second classification to this round in the All England Club, repeating the feat of 2023. In addition, he completely dissipated doubts about his physical state, especially around his right side.
Despite the inconvenience he dragged from his party against Grigor Dimitrov, Sinner played with a protection similar to that used during his morning training and did not evidence significant problems. He only showed a gesture of pain in an attempt to return during the first set, but out of that, his performance was impeccable.
Shelton, current number 10 of the ATP ranking, could barely offer resistance beyond its powerful service. It was expected that he could put in trouble the doubts about the state of Italian, but his limited repertoire was insufficient to compete at the required level.
The first set was resolved in a complicated tie break that Sinner managed to overcome after 0-2 below, winning the next seven points. Then, a break in each of the following sets, both when Shelton took 5-4, was enough to close the match. The American, who only gave his service twice, paid his minimum hesitation.
DJokovic shock in semifinals
Sinner will face Novak Djokovic, who defeated Flavio Cobolli in four sleeves (6-7, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4). The duel promises to be one of the most anticipated in the tournament.
With this victory, Sinner reaches its fourth consecutive semifinal in a Grand Slam, consolidating its leadership in the ranking and expanding the difference with Carlos Alcaraz. The Italian adds 400 more points, while the Spanish cannot add any after being champion in 2023.
“I am very happy with my performance,” Sinner said at the end of the meeting. “When you are in a high -voltage game, you try not to think about pain. The elbow has improved a lot since yesterday,” he said, subtracting importance from his injury.
