From the October 1, 2024the DGT enter the New Regulations for Historic Vehicleswhich will make it easier for owners of Cars over 30 years old continue to use them under specific conditions.
This regulation simplifies the process for classifying a vehicle as historic, making it more economic and accessible, representing a great opportunity for those who own classic vehicles.
What requirements must a vehicle meet to be historic?
For a car to be considered Historic Vehiclemust meet at least one of the following requirements:
- Have 30 years or older from the first registration or from the manufacturing.
- Belong to the General Inventory of Movable Property of the Spanish Historical Heritage.
- Having been declared of cultural interest or have a special interest for some specific reason.
This regulation also includes a special procedure for younger vehicles (less than 30 years old) that have played a relevant role or belonged to a prominent figure, although this process will be more complex.
Simpler and more economical process
One of the main changes is the process simplificationPreviously, owners had to take the car to a laboratory to check its condition. Now, it will be enough for a Technical Service for Historic Vehicles evaluate the car and issue a technical report and a certificate. In addition, the cost of this procedure will be significantly reduced, going from about 600 euros to approximately 200 euros.
Exemptions and limitations of use
With the new regulations, several new features are introduced regarding the ITV and the traffic rules for these vehicles:
- The Cars over 60 years old will no longer have to pass the ITV, while mopeds will be completely exempt.
- Vehicles without seat belts may not exceed the 80 km/h. Also, if the car does not have seat belts, the under 135 cm They will not be able to travel on it.
On the other hand, the use of historic cars will be restricted to one use occasionaldefined as a maximum of 96 days a year. The use of these vehicles is also prohibited for public passenger transport, goodsor agricultural activities.
What happens in big cities?
The DGT has requested the Town halls of the big cities, where they tend to prevail restrictions to older vehicles for environmental reasons, which establish formulas to allow the circulation of these historic vehicles. However, it is likely that the regulations vary depending on the council.
