Brussels endorses the role of biomethane in decarbonization

Renewable gases, both biomethane and hydrogen, are emerging as one of the great keys to decarbonization. The European Commission has endorsed that gas boilers can continue to be used from 2040 with renewable gases in the published guide to apply the directive on the energy efficiency of buildings.

The biomethane, which has similar qualities to natural gas, can be distributed through existing gas infrastructure and can also be used in homes, industries, shops and mobility. Today all boilers are prepared to operate 100% without the need for any investment.

Naturgy wants to lead the impulse of renewable gases in Spain, both in the production and distribution of short -term biomethane, and in the development of hydrogen as an energy vector that will have a significant impact on the medium -term energy mix. For this, the investment planned for the next three years is 1,000 million euros and three biomethane plants, one in Galicia and two in Catalonia are already operational.

Strategic alliances

The company also has a development model based on multisectoral collaboration and strategic alliances, which cover all sectors of the economy. Including those of organic waste and fertilizers, another product resulting from the process.

Naturgy has reached agreements with leading companies in its sectors that foresee the construction and development throughout the Spanish geography of biomethane production plants, which will contribute to the valuation of waste from the agroganader and premises sector, generation of fertilizers kilometer zero and even the management of the residues of the plants themselves. In addition, as a result of all this, the creation of employment and rural development will be promoted, as well as the circular economy and energy independence.

In this context, the alliances established with Hispania Silva and with Reycle, of the same group, with Bioeco EnergĂa and with Energy Group are framed. Together and as a result of these agreements, before 2030 they will be operational not less than 40 biomethane plants. Fruit of the three agreements will be generated 4.6 Biomethane per year, equivalent to the consumption of 920,000 homes, which will contribute to the decarbonization of the economy.

These agreements are a step forward in Naturgy’s impulse to renewable gases that will accelerate the development of biomethane in Spain as a strategic vector to accelerate energy transition.
