Storms in the east of the peninsula could bring locally heavy showers on Thursday, with hail and strong gusts of wind, which will trigger a yellow alert (risk for certain activities) in six communities, while Madrid and La Rioja will be under warning due to heat, and the Canary Islands due to rough seas.
Specifically, heat warnings will be issued in Huesca and Zaragoza (Aragon); Lleida (Catalonia); Metropolitana and Henares and South, Vegas and West (Community of Madrid); Ribera del Ebro (La Rioja); Valencia (Community of Valencia) and Gran Canaria (Canary Islands). Likewise, warnings for coastal phenomena will be registered in Gran Canaria and Tenerife (Canary Islands).
There will also be warnings for rain and storms in Teruel (Aragon); Albacete and Cuenca (Castilla-La Mancha); Barcelona and Gerona (Catalonia); Altiplano and Northwest of Murcia and Vega del Segura (Murcia Region); and Alicante, Castellón and Valencia (Valencian Community).
In Andalusia, rainfall will reach 15 litres per square metre per hour in areas such as the Almanzora valley and Los Vélez in Almería. A similar level of rainfall is expected in the region of Murcia.
In Aragon, the province of Teruel will see accumulations of up to 20 litres per square metre in areas such as Albarracín, Gúdar and Maestrazgo. Castilla-La Mancha will also be affected, with heavy rain in Cuenca and Albacete reaching 15 litres per square metre. Catalonia, for its part, will record up to 20 litres per square metre in the pre-Pyrenees of Barcelona and in the Pyrenees of Girona, a forecast similar to that of large areas of the Valencian Community.
As for temperatures, highs of 36 degrees are expected in Madrid, Lleida, Aragon, La Rioja and the southern coast of Valencia. In the Canary Islands, also on yellow alert, La Palma and Gran Canaria will reach highs of 34 degrees. In addition, in Gran Canaria and Tenerife, alerts will be activated for coastal phenomena, with northeasterly winds reaching between 50 and 61 km/h (Force 7).
Tomorrow, Thursday, the weak trough will cool down a little more and move towards the Mediterranean. Cloudiness will continue in the west and north of Galicia and the western Cantabrian interior, with the possibility of occasional light precipitation. In the afternoon, abundant cloudiness is expected in the centre and south-east half of the peninsula. There will be showers and strong storms, accompanied by hail, in the eastern Pyrenees, the eastern and southern Iberian Peninsula, eastern La Mancha, the interior of the Levantine area and the north of Murcia.
Maximum temperatures will rise in the northeastern half and the Balearic Islands, notably in the upper Ebro, while they will fall in the western third, especially in Rias Baixas. Temperatures will exceed 36 degrees in the depressions in the east and south of the peninsula, as well as in the south of the Canary Islands.
On Friday, a well-formed Atlantic trough will approach from the northwest and begin to interact with the weak trough over the Peninsula, continuing with daytime heat and afternoon storms. Throughout the day, cloudiness is expected to develop in the centre and eastern half of the Peninsula, with the possibility of scattered showers and storms in the eastern third, more likely in the mountains. In fact, they may be locally strong in the Pyrenees, eastern Iberia and eastern La Mancha, without ruling out phenomena of this type in the mountain ranges of the southeast.
Temperatures will drop sharply in the Canary Islands and rise in the Cantabrian Sea and Huelva, with more than 36 degrees in the northeast, the southern Atlantic slope and the southeast of the peninsula.
From Saturday onwards, the weather situation will worsen in a large part of the peninsula with the arrival of a front from the Atlantic, associated with a low pressure system and the formation of a new trough, according to eltiempo.es. These systems will cause an increase in instability, with rain, showers and locally strong storms.
The rain will begin on Saturday in Galicia and will gradually spread to the Cantabrian Sea and the northwest of Castile and Leon. During the afternoon, showers will develop in Navarre, Aragon, inland Catalonia and the Valencian Community, as well as in the mountains of the southeast. In areas of the upper Ebro and the Pyrenees, the rainfall could be intense, accompanied by hail and strong gusts of wind.
On Sunday, the heaviest showers will be concentrated in the Pyrenees, Teruel, a large part of the Valencian Community, Castilla-La Mancha, inland Murcia, eastern Andalusia and Madrid. Heavy rain is also expected in eastern Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.
As for temperatures, a significant drop is expected, especially in the northwest, with Galicia and Castilla y León experiencing the largest falls. In regions such as La Rioja, Navarra, Aragón and the interior of the Valencian Community, temperatures could drop between 8ºC and 10ºC. On the other hand, temperatures will rise in the south of the peninsula and on the coasts of the Canary Islands.
