Vicente Valles considers that Pedro Sánchez has more at stake than continuity in Moncloa in the elections of the November 29. During his intervention in “The Table”, from Antena 3the journalist has analyzed how the electoral result can influence the leadership of the two main parties and has pointed out that, for the socialist leader, a defeat would not necessarily mean abandoning the leadership of the PSOE.
“Pedro Sánchez’s first priority is to continue governing, logically, but there is a second priority for him. If he cannot govern, let the PSOE achieve a good result to stop the opening of a succession debate within the party,” he explained.
Vallés thus distinguishes between two objectives. The first involves gathering the necessary support to continue leading the Executive. The second would depend on the strength with which the socialists came out of the polls, even if the result did not allow them to retain the Government.
Sánchez’s future if he loses power
During the conversation, the journalist stated that election night should clarify both who can govern and which leaders assume the consequences of its result. In his opinion, those who lose power should make way, in the same way as those who accumulate opportunities without being able to achieve it should do so.
However, when it comes to Sánchez, Vallés does not assume that this will be the outcome. “I don’t think that’s his intention.”has indicated the possibility of him abandoning the leadership. In his analysis, a sufficiently solid result could serve to contain the demands for replacement within the PSOE.
This is the journalist’s assessment of the possible post-election scenarios, not a decision announced by Sánchez about his future in the party.
Win the elections and reach Moncloa
Vallés does not rule out that Alberto Núñez Feijóo wins the elections and fails to govern. Asked about that possibility, he responded that “none of this can be ruled out” and recalled that the polls can bring unexpected results.
In another part of his speech he has applied that same distinction to the possibilities of the President of the Government. “If we understand by winning to govern, even if you lose the elections, Sánchez has the possibility of doing so, without a doubt. He already achieved it in 2023 and he could do it now. It is difficult, but it is not impossible,” he stated.
The journalist has also warned that the forecasts at the beginning of the pre-campaign do not guarantee the outcome. Although he has pointed out that numerous polls point to a victory for the right wing, he has insisted that What happens until November 29 remains unknown.
Feijóo’s last chance, according to Vallés
His assessment of the future of the PP leader has been more blunt. “It is the last chance for Feijóo”responded when asked if these elections could be decisive for its continuity.
Vallés has related this response to the responsibility of leaders who do not achieve their objectives after several attempts. For Sánchez, on the other hand, he has placed a second dispute within his own formation, that of achieving a result that allows him to retain the leadership of the PSOE even if he cannot continue in Moncloa.
