September will begin with an episode of very high temperatures in much of Spain. The progressive arrival of the Azores anticyclone from the west will favor a stable environment and make the entry of atlantic stormswhich will allow the thermometers to rise significantly during the first days of the month.
According to the prediction of the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), temperatures may be between 10 and 15 degrees above usual values in large areas of the peninsular interior, the Ebro basin, the north of Castilla y León and the Pyrenean area.
The rise will be gradual during the first days of the week and will reach its maximum on Friday. The most affected areas will be the depressions in the south and northeast of the peninsula, although the heat will also be intense in other parts of the country.
Córdoba, Bilbao and other capitals will exceed 40 degrees
In the Guadalquivir valley, Cordova could reach the 43ºC during the second half of the week. Very high records are also expected in other capitals: Bilbao could reach 42ºC on Friday, while Zaragoza, Lleida, Logroño, Granada and Jaén could exceed the 41ºC.
In the center of the peninsula, Toledo will be around 40 ºC and Madrid could reach 42 ºC during the central days of the episode.
The heat will, however, be much more moderate in the extreme north and the Galician coast. A Coruña and Santander will maintain maximum temperatures around 23-25 ºCwith a clearly softer atmosphere than in the interior and the south.
Tropical nights and minimum temperatures of up to 24ºC
The heat episode will also be noticeable during the night. Early Saturday morning could be especially warm, with tropical nights in large areas of the southwest quadrant, the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro basin and both archipelagos.
In these areas, minimum temperatures could be between 20 and 24 ºCso the nighttime thermal drop will be limited even after sunset.
How long will this heat episode last?
Weather models point to a possible increase in instability and the arrival of precipitation starting this weekend. Until then, the beginning of September will be marked by temperatures much higher than usual for these dates in much of the country.
