The social network Instagram will label profiles that feature people created with artificial intelligence (AI) and will reduce their visibility if those responsible do not warn that there is no real person behind these accounts.
The network, owned by Meta, will rename the current “AI creator” label to “AI generated profile.”
As the company explained in a statement, the measure seeks to make users better understand that the person who appears in the profile has been created using AI tools.
Instagram began testing this identification at the beginning of the year after detecting that some users felt “deceived” when discovering profiles that seemed to belong to real people, but were characters generated by AI.
From now on, those responsible for these accounts will be able to voluntarily activate the label from their profile settings.
For those who do not do so, the platform will identify profiles that use AI-generated people and those responsible will receive a notification to stop appearing in Instagram recommendations.
Affected accounts will have two options: add the “AI generated profile” label or appeal the decision if they consider that Instagram has made a mistake.
The measure does not affect users who simply use AI tools to create or edit content.
