The countdown begins for the entry into force of massive restrictions in low-emission zones for cars with B label

As has been announced for a few years now, cars with the yellow B label from the DGT will be the next to suffer the restrictions of the Low Emission Zones (ZBE). For now, only some of the large cities had confirmed their intention to impose these measures. However, 36 other Catalan towns have decided to join the initiative, affecting drivers of gasoline passenger cars registered since January 2001 and diesel cars from 2006 to 2013/2015.

The current restrictions are limited to denying access to the most polluting vehicles without the right to an environmental badge. NeverthelessFrom 2028, those cars that have the DGT sticker B will also be affected. All of this is due to the collaboration between the Auto 2030 Plan and the ZBEs, which came into force on January 1, 2026 to promote electric mobility, aligning with European regulations that will prohibit the sale of combustion passenger cars and vans from 2035. However, combustion engines may continue to be sold only if they use carbon-neutral synthetic fuels, which certifies a 90% reduction in emissions.

Among the cities confirmed to implement these measures are Madrid or 36 Catalan citiesamong which Barcelona, Badalona, Castelldefels, Sabadell and El Prat de Llobregat stand out, that is, the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona along with different areas of Baix de Llobregat, Vallès Occidental and Maresme.

This measure affects cars between 15 and 20 years old.

According to the Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE), the vehicles that have the B label, yellow, are all those passenger cars and gasoline vans that were registered from January 2001 and diesel from January 2006 until 2013/2015. Likewise, vehicles with more than eight seats and goods transport are also included, regardless of whether they use diesel or gasoline, as of 2006; and motorcycles and mopeds that meet Euro 2 emissions levels.

Although the measures will begin to be implemented in 2028 for most cities, in Madrid and Barcelona have already begun to impose some restrictions. In the capital, the Sustainable Mobility ordinance is in force, in which vehicles with label B They cannot circulate inside the M-30 highway without an environmental label. While Barcelona limits its access during the day on weekdays.

From 2028, cars with a B label will not be able to access different urban areas

However, the intention of some cities is Completely prohibit circulation from 2028 of those vehicles that do not have environmental distinction. Likewise, these areas will begin to expand to occupy more and more municipalities. For this reason, owners of vehicles with a B label are recommended to consider different options to renew their car for one with an ECO label, either through the Auto+ Plan or by purchasing a second-hand or pre-owned vehicle with the ECO or ZERO label.

For cars with C label, another option is convert your car to LPG. This consists of adapting the gasoline or diesel engine of a vehicle so that it can run on Liquefied Petroleum Gas, as long as the engine does not have more than 460 HP of power. Thanks to this procedure, the car could qualify for an ECO label as long as it complies with current regulations and is have the C label. Cars with a B label may be converted, but will not have the option to obtain the ECO label.
