PP and Sumar explore an agreement to nationalize Sahrawis against a PSOE weighed down by Morocco

Western Sahara and the annexation of the PSOE to the Moroccan theses once again complicate the parliamentary existence of Pedro Sanchez. This time with the help of a possible alliance between his government partner, Sumar, and the main opposition party, the PP. Both parties share the basis that those Sahrawis born under the administration of the former colony should have Spanish nationality and are open to reaching an agreement for this in the Congress of Deputies.

This Tuesday the presentation of the Justice Commission to continue processing a Sumar law in the Lower House that seeks precisely that goal. This is a rule that had been taken into consideration in February of last year, with all parties voting in favor except the PSOE, which voted against, and Vox, which abstained.

The socialists had been blocking the process of the law until now, and they had no choice but to allow it. However, the PSOE is not going to support the law, since it is contrary to the interests of Morocco and the socialists are constantly defending them since the Government changed Spain’s position regarding the Sahara in 2022 without any explanation. This rejection pushes Sumar into the arms of the PP if he wants to approve his law and the truth is that there is water in the pool.

“Let’s see what is put on the table and look for the best solution for the Sahrawis“, sources from the PP assure LA RAZÓN. They regret that this is a group that has received nothing but “beats” since Pedro Sánchez is president of the Government and that it is “common sense and justice” that those who were born under the Spanish administration have the nationality of this country.

The sources acknowledge that there is still a long parliamentary work to be done in the Commission, which has to prepare a report with all the amendments and the parties have to reach agreements for it to prosper, but they assure that the music sounds good. They even point out that there are already precedents that can serve as inspiration. They refer to the granting of Spanish nationality to Sephardim originating from Spain, a norm promoted by the Executive of Mariano Rajoy. “It is not the first time this has been done, now we just have to reach agreements,” they insist.

This new impulse that the Sumar law has experienced is due to the fact that stateless people, a circumstance that greatly affects the Sahrawis, have been left out of the massive regularization promoted by the Government. Thus, this group has been discriminated against, despite being born under Spanish administration, compared to other foreigners from other countries.

To try to alleviate this, Sumar pressured the PSOE to unblock the processing of their law to grant them Spanish nationality. Yolanda Díaz’s space He even showed himself willing to ally with the PP at the Commission Table if the PSOE He did not give in, something that the socialists have ended up doing. But from there to voting in favor of the norm there is a very long road.

In fact, last week representatives of all political parties met with the Polisario Front in Congress, which asked them to try to tackle the problem that stateless people had been left out of regularization. The PSOE was the only one that did not attend the meeting.
