Brussels rules out eliminating renewable gase boilers

The measure, collected in the published guide to apply the directive on the energy efficiency of the buildings, is part of the climate objectives of the Commission, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and moving towards climatic neutrality in 2050.

The objective is to reduce emissions in the residential sector, one of the large energy consumers in Europe, without affecting hybrid boilers or those designed to function with renewable gases, such as biomethane or green hydrogen.

With this decision Brussels marks a key step towards a more efficient future in the energy consumption of homes and denies rumors about an alleged total prohibition of gas boilers in member countries.

In this sense, the European Union has confirmed that there is no such measure in its regulatory agenda and that the immediate or progressive withdrawal of boilers that use renewable fuels is not contemplated.

This clarification ends a misinformation campaign that had generated great concern among consumers, manufacturers and installers, especially in countries such as Spain where an important part of households uses gas heating systems. The Commission has reiterated that its approach goes through an ordered energy transition and based on technical criteria.

One of the most relevant aspects of the positioning of the European Commission is the explicit recognition of the role that biomethane will play in the future energy system. This renewable gas, produced from agricultural, urban or industrial organic waste, is presented as a relevant sustainable alternative.

According to Brussels, the biomethane can continue to be used in thermal facilities beyond 2040, provided that its availability and distribution is guaranteed through existing networks.

According to the Naturgy energy company, the biomethane is emerging as one of the great keys in the reduction of emissions, since it helps to reduce the carbon footprint of households. In addition, having similar qualities to natural gas, it can be distributed through existing gas infrastructure and used in homes, industries, shops and also for transport mobility.

According to Spanish energy, today all boilers are prepared to work 100% with biomethane without the need for any investment. Therefore, boom with biomethane is the best form, and also the most economical, to decarbonize households

With 30% of the biomethane potential that exists in Spain, the entire housing park in Spain could be decarbonized without the owners having to face any cost. In addition, it encourages the circular economy by taking advantage of organic waste and decreases the energy dependence of other countries.
