Spain faces a New national judicial strike convened for July 1, 2 and 3, 2025in protest for two legislative reforms promoted by the government that directly affect the judicial and fiscal career.
The protest has been organized by the main associations of the sector: the Professional Association of the Magistracy (APM), the Francisco de Vitoria Judicial Association (AJFV), the Independent Judicial Forum (FJI), the Association of Prosecutors (AF) and the Professional and Independent Association of Prosecutors (APIF).
These organizations consider that the reforms in question could compromise judicial independence and the balance of powers in the Spanish institutional system. The call also includes a protest concentration on June 28 against the headquarters of the Supreme Court, in what is anticipated as a strong symbolic gesture.
The reforms that have turned on the spark
The strike responds to the rejection of two key initiatives in judicial matters:
Reform of the Access to Judicial and Fiscal Races: the modification of the current selection processes is proposed, which – according to the associations – could open the door to more subjective or politicized criteria, weakening the principle of merit and capacity.
Reform of the Organic Statute of the Fiscal Ministry: The reform strengthens the figure of the State Attorney General, a position that remains of direct designation by the Government, which, in the opinion of the conveners, increases the risk of political control over the Public Ministry.
In both cases, judges and prosecutors consider that the content of the reforms represents a direct attack on the impartiality of the judicial system and alert a “undercover politicization” that could call into question citizen confidence in justice.
