Just a month ago there were two very interesting developments. On the one hand, the Xiaomi 15 was presented in China, a smartphone that has not yet arrived in Spain. At the same time, the latest iPhone arrived on the market, with a particular feature: it allowed, in cases where there was no signal, to make calls or send messages via satellite. The advance opened the door to communication between phones beyond lines and the internet. Now we know a new feature of the Xiaomi 15 that, at the time of launch, went unnoticed: Xiaomi Star.
This system allows you to make phone calls without needing a connection to the mobile network, but it goes further. Although it is still not known exactly when this phone will arrive in Europe and whether Xiaomi Star will be a feature included in its specificationsYes, we are aware that this is something really important. Something that has nothing to do with Apple’s satellite communication or the Starlink network.
What we know about Xiaomi Star is that, at the moment, it requires two Xiaomi 15s. The compatibility between both devices allows us to establish a communication without the need for a mobile network, in a maximum radius of up to 3.5 kilometers. As if this were not enough, Xiaomi assures that the connection is capable of passing through up to seven layers of walls, although the thickness is unknown.
The technology is based on a two-way communication system, we assume similar to the old walkie-talkies and which, for now, is only available in the latest models from the Chinese manufacturer. If it will reach older models or if it will be possible to have this technology in other mobile phones, It is somewhat complex, since it may be a technology of government interest. And we know how this works when it comes to a development of Chinese origin. If not, ask Huawei.
What is clear is that Xiaomi has opened a door and it will not take long to reach other devices. Maybe in a few months or a few years, but the truth is that it will come. And it has the potential to change the way we communicate in extreme times, such as emergencies, weather disasters, or communications disruption.
