Three years have passed since it became known that WhatsApp was working on an option to identify and function on its platform with usernames, without having to reveal the phone number. Enough time to forget about it, but now they are right around the corner. WhatsApp has announced on its blog that, Starting this week, users will now be able to reserve the one they want to have on the platform and can be used later in this same year.
The company explains that with this procedure it hopes that ‘everyone will have the opportunity to choose the username they prefer’, but with more than 3 billion usersthe competition is going to be tight in many cases, so it is advisable to book it as soon as possible.
For those who are not sure which one to choose, the platform makes available a username generator and also gives the option of claim your existing Instagram or Facebook username on WhatsApp to ‘some people, such as creators, small businesses and organizations.’
No username directory
There will be no directory in which you can search for other users by name, as happens on other messaging platforms. In the same way that you have to know the phone number to contact someone, you must also know write the exact username to establish contact and, if you have it activated, they will not see your phone number in the conversation.
To prevent anyone from contacting another person, WhatsApp will create an optional username key that others will need to know to send you a message.
How to reserve a username on WhatsApp
You must update the app to its most recent version and follow the path Settings > Account > User name.
WhatsApp indicates that it will implement usernames gradually over the coming months, notifying users in the application itself when they will be available in their country.
