Ultra: the new autonomous vehicle of the US army

The idea of ​​the military vehicle has always been the same: a driver at the wheel, a crew and, in many cases, soldiers transporting ammunition, fuel or supplies to the front line. But that image could begin to change.

The United States Marine Corps has awarded its first production contract for deploy fully autonomous ground vehicles, a step that marks the entry of this technology into real operations and not just in demonstration programs. The contract, valued at nearly $20 million, will allow the American company Overland AI to deliver more than a dozen of these vehicles before the beginning of 2027. Although the announcement may remind us of the arrival of autonomous cars on the roads, the technological challenge is much greater.

Most civilian autonomous vehicles depend on high-precision maps, clearly defined traffic signs and, in many cases, a continuous connection with satellite positioning systems. In an armed conflict, exactly the opposite occurs. Roads can disappear after an explosion, Bridges will be destroyed, communications will be deliberately jammed, and GPS signals will be rendered unusable by electronic warfare. That forces the vehicle to make decisions for itself.

Thanks to a set of cameras, sensors, radars and artificial intelligence algorithms, These vehicles are capable of interpreting the terrain, identifying obstacles and calculating alternative routes even when they lose communication with their operators. According to Overland AIthis autonomy allows the vehicle to continue advancing even if it is isolated from the communications network, an especially important capability in scenarios where the enemy tries to block or interfere with transmissions.

Although the word “military robot” usually evokes armed machines, this vehicle was born with a much less flashy, but possibly more important mission: transporting supplies. From ammunition, batteries, fuel to spare parts or equipment that will be able to reach deployed units without exposing a driver to enemy fire.

In this first phase, the ULTRA will support the Marine Air Defense Integrated System (MADIS), responsible for protecting troops against drones and low-level aircraft. Instead of replacing existing combat vehicles, it will act as a logistical companion capable of keeping units supplied while they remain deployed.

It may seem like a secondary task, but military history shows that logistics often decide the outcome of wars. Modern armies consume enormous amounts of fuel, ammunition and materiel. In recent conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine, supply convoys have become one of the priority targets for drones, missiles and artillery. Eliminating the driver reduces one of the most obvious risks.

The idea of ​​using unmanned ground vehicles is not new. Since the beginning of this century, different armies have experimented with platforms capable of carrying out reconnaissance, bomb disposal or surveillance tasks. The difference is that most depended on an operator who controlled them remotely. The new systems incorporate a much greater degree of autonomy.

They don’t need to be instructed for every turn or every obstacle. They analyze the environment, plan the route and continually adapt their behavior as they progress. That doesn’t mean they act completely on their own. Strategic decisions remain the responsibility of human operators. Autonomy is limited, for now, to navigation and certain mobility functions.

And then there is artificial intelligence. In recent years, artificial intelligence has transformed Internet search engines, virtual assistants or programs capable of generating images. Now it seeks to orient itself without GPS, interpret changing terrain, avoid unexpected obstacles and continue functioning even when communications disappear. In about a year, we’ll see how it performs.
