The high temperatures that are being experienced this summer in Andalusia are causing more and more people to find themselves in the search for places to cool off. A mission that is complicated in landlocked provinces like Seville. However, there are other alternatives to beaches and swimming pools, and also surrounded by a natural setting: the swamps.
One of the most popular swamps due to its biodiversity and the possibility of sailing in its waters is the one found in the Torre del Águila reservoirbuilt in the Salado de Morón stream, within the Guadalquivir hydrographic demarcation. This artificial construction is located in the municipality of El Palmar de Troya, just 47 minutes from Seville.
Around it, the presence of small hillswith a height that varies between 144 and 51 meters, as well as gentle slopes. Furthermore, the great concentration of water, coming not only from the Salado de Morón River, but also from the streams of Santiago, Guadainfantilla and Pilar del Coronil, has created an ideal natural space to enjoy long days of sailing and family meals.
This swamp is home to a wide variety of bird species
Among the biodiversity that can be found in the area, the presence of a wide variety of treesamong which the eucalyptus trees stand out. Likewise, the patches of tamarisk that can be found on the banks of the swamp and the different grassland areas located around it are surprising. All this creates a landscape that stands out for the presence of nature in an area that is characterized by being drier.
Due to these characteristics, and its proximity to the Doñana wetlandsBrazo del Este and Endorheic Complex of Utrera, the swamp has also become the home and resting area of different birds, especially aquatic species. Among some of the specimens that can be observed in the area are the common pochard, the mallard, the shoveler, the common coot or the duck, among others.
The swamp has an area of almost 1,000 hectares and its capacity is 70 hm3 of water, although as of August 13, its capacity is only 26.45% complete. Besides, the height of the reservoir is almost 30 meterscreating a space for the accumulation of water and materials in order to be used in the region for agricultural activities.
The favorite navigation area of many Sevillians
However, in summer it becomes one of the favorite navigation areas for Sevilliansas well as for water activities such as windsurfing. In addition, it has areas with picnic areas and playgrounds to be able to spend the day peacefully both with family and friends. As for fishing, Tourism Seville reports that this activity can be uncomfortable due to the presence of boats and jet skis.
For hiking lovers, too You will be able to take different routes through the area. One of the most recommended is the one that begins on the banks of the swamp until reaching the remains of the Eagle Towerfor which it receives its name. This construction of medieval origin is located 7 kilometers from the town and its main function was as a watchtower. Likewise, it is built on the remains of Siarum, an ancient Roman city whose extension reaches La Cañada, the municipality where the route ends.
While those who prefer to take advantage of the trip to visit another of the historic municipalities of Spain, can go to The Palmar de Troya. This town has different points of tourist and gastronomic interest to complete a very different and refreshing summer day. All this just 47 minutes from Seville by car, no possibility of traveling by public transport.
