The meteoric advance of gene therapy and neuroscience is hostage to its own nature. The explosion of pharmaceutical trials in China has caused the global drying up of the Macaca fascicularis market, the only primate capable of replicating human immunological behavior with very high precision.
With demand skyrocketing, the price of the crab-eating macaque has almost tripled and threatens to paralyze studies of critical diseases. The budget of Guo Xiangyu’s laboratory at Jinan University in Guangzhou does not go to waste on supercomputers or cutting-edge reagents. It evaporates in monkeys. And they are ruining it. To unravel serious neurodegenerative pathologies, the team requires between 30 and 50 macaques per year. It recently paid 80,000 yuan per head, however, since it started this year, the market has entered an unaffordable spiral and breeders in southern China now demand up to 200,000 yuan (about 25,700 euros) per specimen. And that’s with luck.
“The problem is not even the price anymore,” warns the researcher. “You call the suppliers and they tell you that there aren’t any, that the calves are reserved for years to come.” The direct consequence is that dozens of publicly funded projects are closing because they simply cannot pay the toll. The “biotech winter” that froze investments in the sector in 2023 is now history.
China has stepped on the accelerator and the thaw has caused a tsunami in national R&D. In 2025 alone, the country broke its record with more than 5,000 clinical trials and its pharmaceutical companies closed multimillion-dollar agreements with giants like Merck. All that innovation machinery needs fuel. And in biology, that fuel is called a crab-eating macaque.
It is the “gold standard” of biotechnology. Their immune system, brain and metabolism are almost identical to ours. If you develop a next-generation gene therapy, a vaccine against a lethal virus, or a Neuralink-style brain implant, the regulatory agency will require testing in primates.
It is the ultimate ethical and scientific firewall. Yes, we have organoids in Petri dishes and very powerful artificial intelligence simulations. But today, no algorithm can predict how an entire nervous system or a living liver will react to an unprecedented compound.
60% for export
Before the pandemic, the Asian giant exported 60% of the monkeys used by United States laboratories. In 2020, Beijing turned off the tap, citing biosecurity and never reopened it. Overnight, the West panicked. Prices in the United States reached $50,000 per macaque. The industry, desperate, looked for alternatives in Cambodia, Vietnam or Mauritius, but the remedy brought its own poisons.
High-level science requires immaculate animals. If you use an animal captured illegally in the jungle (a scandal that ended with Cambodian officials charged by the US a couple of years ago) you risk bringing previous pathogens or antibodies. If that happens, the data is contaminated and you throw away a million-dollar clinical trial. To avoid surprises, big players opt for brute force. Charles River Laboratories, one of the largest suppliers of experimental animals in the United States, spent $510 million at the beginning of the year to buy its Cambodian supplier and ensure that no one else touched its supply chain. Cornered by shortages, the US FDA has been trying for months to relax rules, allowing certain drugs to skip six months of toxicity testing in primates if the computer models are sound. It is a patch, but it does not solve the underlying problem.
Five months pregnant
You can’t make macaques like microchips. Biology has its own times, and they are desperately slow. It takes almost four years for a female macaque to reach sexual maturity. The pregnancy lasts five and a half months, and they give birth to a single calf. Furthermore, scientists do not buy monkeys by weight; They need specific genetic profiles, ages and sexes for their studies to have statistical validity.
While biotechnology promises miraculous cures at breakneck speed thanks to AI or genetic editing, the reproductive reality of mammals has pulled the handbrake. No monkeys, no rehearsals. And without these, the next big medical breakthrough against Alzheimer’s or cancer could be stuck in an empty cage.
A bubble that will not be regulated
The irony of this crisis is that short-term greed is blowing up the future. That is to say, The pure and simple market rules of supply and demand are making it even more complicated for the situation to regulate itself.
And, attracted by stratospheric prices, numerous Chinese breeders are selling their young females instead of retaining them to impregnate and breed them and thus be able to expand their colonies. They make cash now at the expense of guaranteeing a brutal deficit for the rest of the decade, but no one can resist being able to earn extremely inflated prices now.
