The AEMET warns of the arrival of Regina, the high-impact storm that will bring intense rains to these areas

a new high impact stormnamed Regina by the Portuguese meteorological service, will cause starting this Monday abundant rains in the Canary Islands and in the south and east of the Peninsulaaccording to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

The arrival of this storm will mark a change of trend towards more unstable weather in a good part of the country, with a progressive increase in cloudiness and Precipitation that may be accompanied by storms and be locally intense. This Monday, Storm Regina already reaches the Canary Islands, where Areas of La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera and Tenerife are on yellow alert due to strong gusts of wind.

It is about the fourteenth high impact storm -those that have names-, since between December and February, coinciding with the months of meteorological winter, there have already been thirteen others. The last one was Pedro, although it will be the seventeenth since the start of the season, in the month of October.

With Regina the season with the highest number of appointments is equalthat of the years 2023/24. On that occasion, storm number 17 (Renata) was named on April 14.

Six communities on alert

Six communities are on yellow alert (low danger) due to spells of wind of up to 70 kilometers per hour and/or maritime storm, according to Aemet forecasts.

In Andalusiathe yellow warning affects Almería, the coast of Granada and the Strait of Cádizgiven the forecast of waves of up to three meters. In addition, the Poniente area and the capital of Almeria will register wind gusts of up to 70 km/h.

In Canary Islands Gusts of wind of the same intensity and coastal phenomena are expected. Also on the Cantabrian slope of Navarre Gusts of up to 70 kilometers per hour will blow.

These communities are joined by three others on yellow alert due to coastal phenomena. the Murcia Regionwith waves of up to three meters in Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón; the Valencian Communityon the southern coast of Alicante; and Galiciawhere the west and southwest of A Coruña will remain under warning until 9:00 a.m.

Change of weather and more rain

According to the AEMET, the formation of a Isolated cold low between the Canary Islands and the southwest of the peninsula. At the beginning of the day, slightly cloudy or clear skies will predominate, except in the eastern third of the peninsula, Alborán and mountain areas, where there will be low cloudiness with morning fog banks, and in Galicia, where a front will leave skies covered with rain in its western half.

During the second half of the day, cloudiness will increase and skies will remain cloudy or overcast in most of the country.with rains that will spread in the form of showers with storms, which may be locally strong in the western third of the peninsula.

Likewise, precipitation is expected in most of the eastern façade, the Strait, the area around the Central System and regions of the Southern plateau, without ruling out occasional showers in other parts of the country, except in the northeastern third and the Balearic Islands.

In the Canary Islands, cloudy or intermittent skies are expected, with the tail of a front tending to cover them and leaving precipitation in the second half of the day, unlikely to the south. In addition, haze is expected in the southeast half of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands.

Temperatures drop

Maximum temperatures are decreasing in the eastern and western thirds of the peninsula, increasing on the Cantabrian coasts and with few changes in the rest. The minimums are decreasing in the extreme northeast of the peninsula and increasing in the rest of the Peninsula, light in the southern half, moderate in the north and incredibly notable in the Cantabrian Sea.

Rainfall of more than 100 l/m², storms and strong winds

According to the meteorological portal Meteored, Storm Regina will leave scattered showers on the Peninsula, Ceuta and Melilla between today and tomorrow, accompanied by mud and occasional storms, while in the Canary Islands, locally intense rainfall is expected in the north of the most mountainous islands, with possible snowfall in the surroundings of Teide and in the peaks of La Palma.

Looking towards the middle of the week, the low will move towards the Alboran Sea, intensifying the downpours in Andalusia and the Mediterranean slope, with accumulated amounts that could exceed 100 liters per square meter in points of the Valencian Community, Catalonia and eastern Aragon.

Furthermore, Meteored warns of the possible formation of a small damage at the end of the week that could reactivate the rainsin a scenario still marked by uncertainty. The episode will be accompanied by haze, storms, lower snow levels and strong easterly winds in the east of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands.
