The AEMET puts these communities on alert due to freezing cold of up to 6 degrees below zero

Temperatures have dropped sharply, leaving winter-like values ​​and even very cold in some regions. The icy environment, with widespread frost, will continue for the next few days, according to data from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), which indicates that this Wednesday seven communities have activated warnings for minimum temperatures of 6 degrees below zero. Where will it be colder and will we have frost?

In the northern half of the country, Aragón, Asturias, Cantabria, Navarra, La Rioja and the provinces of Burgos, León and Palencia (Castilla y León) and Lleida (Catalonia) are in the yellow level due to low temperatures, with records of up to -6 °C. In Catalonia, in addition to the low temperatures in Lleida, there is a yellow alert for snowfall in the Pyrenees and pre-Pyrenees, where accumulations above 1,000 to 1,200 meters are expected.

Rain alerts in the Mediterranean area

This Wednesday, low pressures are expected to dominate the south of the peninsula, forming an easterly flow that will favor the instability of the Mediterranean environment with abundant cloudiness and precipitation. The provinces of Alicante and Valencia (Valencian Community) have activated the yellow alert for rain that could reach 20 liters per square meter in one hour, especially in parts of the coast. These precipitations could be accompanied by storms. In Catalonia, the rains will affect the coasts of Barcelona and Tarragona, with an expected accumulation of 20 liters in one hour and also accompanied by probable storms.

In the rest of the peninsula, abundant cloudiness is also expected, with weak rainfall in the Cantabrian area, La Rioja and the north of Galicia and Castilla y León, without ruling out occasional rainfall in nearby places, as well as in points in the rest of the eastern thirds. and southeast peninsulas. The sun will only shine on the southern half of the Atlantic slope. The snow level will be between 900 and 1,200 meters in the southeast of the peninsula, and 600 to 900 meters in the northern half, tending to rise above 1,000 in the northeast.

Where will it be colder?

Temperatures will drop in Mediterranean areas, the northeast of the peninsula and the west of the Central System and the Northern Plateau, and will rise in the Balearic Islands. In provincial capitals, the coldest days will be spent in cities such as Ávila, Vitoria, Zamora, Soria, Pamplona, ​​Lleida, Logroño, León, Burgos and Cuenca, among others, where thermometers will range between 4 and 7 degrees maximum; . On the contrary, the warmest day will be spent in Almería, with 17 degrees, and Seville, with 16 degrees.

Thursday will see showers on the Mediterranean coast, the southwest of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, as well as a cold environment with night frosts in areas of Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León and La Rioja. Light snowfall could also occur in mountainous areas, with it being more likely in the southeast. Snow levels will range between 600-900 meters in the north and northwest, and 1,000-1,400 meters in the rest.

On this day, maximum temperatures will experience an increase in the northeast of the peninsula, especially in the interior of Catalonia, while in the rest of the country they will remain unchanged. Daytime temperatures will be around 14-17 degrees in cities such as Alicante, Almería, Badajoz, Cádiz, Barcelona, ​​Córdoba, A Coruña, San Sebastián, Málaga, Murcia and Valencia.

How long will this cold episode last in Spain?

For Friday, unstable weather is expected in the west of the peninsula, with abundant cloudiness and rain that will mainly affect the southern half of the Atlantic slope, Alborán and western Galicia. Precipitation will be more intense and persistent in western Andalusia, especially in coastal areas.

On the contrary, in the rest of the Mediterranean area it is expected that the anticyclone will be installed with a tendency towards stabilization. In the Canary Islands, cloudy intervals will predominate with showers on the mountainous islands, although a storm to the west of the archipelago will gradually increase cloudiness and rain in that area.

As for temperatures, Friday will mark the beginning of a general rise, with maximums that will approach 10 degrees in the interior during the weekend and will exceed 15 degrees in several areas of the south and east. Although the frosts will be less extensive, they will continue to affect the interior of the northern half, areas of the southeast and the southern plateau, and will still be strong in the northern mountains.
