María E. Ocasioexecutive director of SDS, indicated that the captains will lead the cleaning equipment in the different coasts of the archipelago. He explained that those interested in registering to lead the brigades, motivate their communities and be “agents of change” must be 14 years or older. Children under 18 must receive the support and company of an adult during the entire training and execution process.

“The beaches of Puerto Rico are popular destinations and we must ensure that they are clean and safe for those who visit them. Beyond enjoyment, it is about sending a clear message to the world about the commitment of the Puerto Rican people with conservation and sustainability. We are convinced that it is possible to enjoy consciously and responsible, ”said Ocasio, in a press release.

He stressed that those interested in being captains must have a “genuine commitment” to the environment and its community. Among their responsibilities, captains will be in charge of coordinating the cleaning of a beach, river or natural space, leading a group of volunteers and submitting a final report with the results.

This year’s edition of the international cleaning of coasts commemorates the 40th anniversary of this global initiative timped by Ocean Conservancyas well as 24 years of uninterrupted leadership by SDS in Puerto Rico.

According to Ocasio, the event not only seeks to remove marine waste, but also collect “important data” on the type, quantity and weight of garbage, thus promoting sustainable behavior changes and alternatives. This year, he added, it will be educated on the impact of the waste and plastics of a single use on the coasts and the responsible use of natural resources will be encouraged.

“We urge young people and adults to join this great mobilization for our coasts. Participating in international coastal cleaning is much more than collecting garbage; is to assume a real commitment to the environmental well -being of Puerto Rico and with the legacy that we want to leave the next generations ”Said the executive director, stating that the initiative represents the largest environmental volunteer day in the country.
