San Juan Bay Estuary announces scholarship program for environmental research

The non-profit entity San Juan Bay Estuary announced this Friday the offer of a scholarship (“fellowship”) for students at the graduate level – master’s and doctorate – aimed at research focused on addressing the problems identified in the Juan Méndez ravine, in the capital.

The studies and analyzes carried out by the scholarship recipients will contribute to the development of strategies that strengthen the resilience of the region, highlighted the executive director of Estuario, Brenda Torres Barreto.

The deadline to submit proposals is next December 15.

“As a science-based entity, Estuario manages projects that address deficiencies in the natural and gray water infrastructure in the metropolitan region of Saint John. This effort is a long-term one and is carried out incorporating every factor that affects this condition.from communities to municipal and state governments,” said Torres Barreto, in a press release.

“We need to have scientists committed to this metropolitan region and with the skills to develop comprehensive projects. This scholarship encourages students and researchers at the graduate level from Puerto Rican institutions to focus their scientific knowledge and research in regions that face challenges such as those faced by the Juan Méndez ravine in San Juan,” he added.

Selected fellows will receive a stipend for a period of six months, with the possibility of an extension for an additional six months. The stipend for master’s researchers will be $10,000 and for doctoral researchers, $15,000..

The Juan Méndez stream is a body of water that originates in the Urban Forest, in Piedras Riverand drains into the San José lagoon. Currently, it is channeled; However, the cement structure is worn and has collapsed in segments. Estuario is undertaking a creek restoration effort by incorporating innovative strategies, such as green infrastructure, and ensuring that sanitary discharges are stopped.
