In an internal memo to employees reported by WSJ, Simo said that ‘we realized that we were spreading our efforts across too many applications and technology stacks, and that we need to simplify them. This fragmentation has been holding us back and has made it difficult to achieve the level of quality we want.‘.
According to the outlet, OpenAI leaders have been analyzing which aspects to prioritize less and Simo told employees last week that they should avoid ‘getting distracted by secondary tasks’.
OpenAI battles with companies like Anthropic and Google for developing the best models and products. Unifying and accelerating the development of its desktop offering gives OpenAI an advantage in that race. It could also make more users discover that products like Atlas and Codex exist, because right now they are much less known than ChatGPT.
Atlas is probably the most unknown of the three products. It was launched in October and allows browse the web with integrated ChatGPTwhich puts it above traditional browsers, which offer fewer features. Unfortunately, this browser is only available on macOSso fewer users have had the opportunity to try it.
