Increase clean energy production, optimize existing infrastructure and reduce impact environmental are objectives integrated into Naturgy’s strategy to contribute to a more sustainable energy system.
To materialize these proposals, and also within the framework of the company’s commitment to innovation and energy transition, Naturgy will invest 330 million euros in the technological transformation of six wind farms.
On the whole, A total of 274 wind turbines will be replaced by more modern and efficient machines, in such a way that the current installed power will be maintained, which between the six parks is 207 MW. Upon completion, 40 wind turbines will integrate the six parks, but they will produce 75% more energy while minimizing the landscape and environmental impact.
Besides, The projects incorporate battery storage systems with a capacity of 26 MW and 94 MWh, and an autonomy of four hours, which reinforces the contribution of these installations to the flexibility and stability of the system. The parks that will be repowered are Los Llanos, in the province of Málaga (Andalusia); Trucafort, in Tarragona (Catalonia); Nerea, in Zamora (Castilla y León); Uzkita, in Navarra; El Pilar, in Zaragoza (Aragon), and Los Pedreros, in Albacete (Castilla-La Mancha).
The parks are mainly owned by Naturgy and have local partners such as L’Energètica, in Trucafort, or EREN in the case of Nerea.
With these actions, Naturgy advances its strategy for modernizing renewable assets, contributing to a more flexible and sustainable energy system.
Minihydraulics
The company was a pioneer in the field of repowering, when in 2016 it improved energy production and reduced the number of wind turbines and the visual impact of the installation in the Cabo Vilano wind farm. Now it is promoting the modernization of the Monte Redondo, As Somozas and Novo parks in Galicia.
In addition to the wind farms, Naturgy will also promote the renovation of six mini-hydro generation facilities with actions that involve the renewal of equipment and implementation of measures to optimize the operation of the plants and reduce their impact on the water environment of the Bolarque I hydroelectric plants (Guadalajara); Las Picadas, San Juan and Buenamesón (Community of Madrid); Puente Nuevo (Ávila), as well as the La Toba dam (Cuenca). Naturgy thus reinforces its commitment to more efficient and sustainable management of water resources.
