After spending half a year inaccessible, ChatGPT is available again in WhatsApp in the European Union. OpenAI you have reactivated access to your assistant through the app Goal after European authorities will force the company to open its platform and allow the return of rival artificial intelligence chatbots.
ChatGPT first came to WhatsApp in December 2024when OpenAI launched the experimental service 1-800-CHATGPT. Any user could save your US number and chat with the assistant from WhatsApp without installing the ChatGPT application or having to create an account.
In October 2025, Meta modified the platform conditions WhatsApp Business to prevent third-party vendors from using its API as a distribution channel for general-purpose AI assistants. The measure came into force in January 2026 and left out ChatGPT and other competing serviceswhile Meta AI it remained the only AI available within WhatsApp.
The European Commission opened an investigation for a possible abuse of a dominant position and on June 8 imposed provisional measures so that Goal would restore access to rival attendees in the European Economic Area. OpenAI officially confirmed the return of ChatGPT this July 13 and it can now be used again from Spain.

It is not necessary to have an OpenAI user to use ChatGPT on WhatsApp. The assistant can be used directly with the WhatsApp phone number, although there is the possibility of link an OpenAI account from the ChatGPT profile in the messaging app. The company assures that this partnership provides higher usage limitsbut it has not indicated that it allows all the advantages of a Plus or Pro subscription to be transferred to WhatsApp.
OpenAI has also not specified which specific model this version currently uses.. WhatsApp does not include a selector to switch between GPT-5.6reasoning models or other variants, so attributing one of them without confirmation would be speculative.
What you can do with ChatGPT on WhatsApp
Its operation is especially useful for quick tasks. You can write conventional questions and requests, send voice notes to use as prompts or forward text or voice messages from other conversations to summarize, translate, correct, or prepare a response. ChatGPT cannot enter other chats by itself or read WhatsApp history, only analyzes what the user copies or forwards.
Also supports images. It can recognize its content, describe objects and scenes, read text visible in photos or screenshots, and extract it for editing, summarizing, or translating. Besides, OpenAI has enabled the generation of images and access to recent information from the internet.
The experience remains more limited than the general ChatGPT app. It does not offer real-time voice conversations, model selector, advanced research, projects, connectors with other services, or the functions of ChatGPT Work. OpenAI only confirms sending messages, images, and voice notes, along with creating images. There are also usage limits, the amount of which may vary depending on available capacity and whether the account is linked.
