With 30% of the biomethane potential that exists in Spain, we could decarbonise the entire housing stock in the country without the owners having to bear any costs. Today, all boilers are prepared to operate at 100% with this renewable gas. In fact, it does not require adapting the gas infrastructure, transport or distribution to our homes, being 100% compatible with current equipment. Not in vain, the RepowerEU plan established a proportional production target of 35 TWh for 2030 in Spain.
“Spain needs and can have much more ambition and drive in terms of renewable gases. Biomethane is the great opportunity that Spain must take advantage of in terms of renewable energy and is the most sustainable way to achieve residential decarbonisation,” explains Raúl Suárez, CEO of Nedgia. The Naturgy Group’s gas distributor also plays a strategic role in the deployment of renewable gases, through a gas infrastructure made up of a network of more than 57,000 kilometres present in 1,150 municipalities. It has more than 5.5 million supply points, to which it can now safely and efficiently deliver the energy supply of natural gas and renewable gases, biomethane and hydrogen.
Spain has great potential for the development of biomethane: With 160 TWh/year, we could cover all residential demand and almost half of industrial demand. At the same time, this development would save the emission of 8.3 million tons of methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere by the decomposition of waste that is reused to generate it. In addition, developing the potential of biomethane in Spain would mean savings of up to 4 billion euros for consumers by reducing purchases from third countries. In addition, biomethane helps create employment in rural areas and attracts investment in primary sectors, since agricultural and livestock waste is one of its main raw materials.
For all these reasons, Naturgy is firmly committed to making the development of this renewable gas a reality. The group has a broad portfolio of renewable gas projects at varying stages of progress and has three of its own biomethane plants in operation. Naturgy is well positioned to take advantage of the opportunity offered by renewable gases to move towards decarbonisation. The company is prepared to deploy significant investments and resources in this key player in decarbonisation, which includes all sectors of the economy.
Biomethane can power the energy sector – through the use of decarbonised energy that can be used in industry –, homes, businesses or even mobility. It can also power other sectors, such as waste, by avoiding methane emissions due to inadequate management, or organic fertilisers, as this is another product generated in their development. Adaptability makes biomethane a vital element for a prosperous future with more sustainable and secure energy.
