AAAS will hold a historic scientific convention on its 40th anniversary in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean

The Caribbean Division of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS, in English) will celebrate its 40th anniversary and annual convention this October 24 and 25, an event that marks four decades of commitment to the promotion of science, education and innovation in the region.

Under the theme “Caribbean science: past, present and future”, the convention will recognize the legacy of 40 years of research in Puerto Rico and the Caribbeanprojecting, at the same time, an agenda that connects the scientific community with international networks of excellence.

According to the doctor Kevin M. Alicea Torrespresident of the organization, “during these four decades, “The Division has promoted the development of new generations of scientists, promoted interdisciplinary dialogue and encouraged the integration of science in public policy and daily life”.

Since its founding in 1985, the “AAAS Caribbean Division” has kept its conventions free and accessible, not only for the scientific community, but also for all citizens.

“This year, we will have a program that unites the past, present and future of science in the Caribbean, with the participation of researchers, industry professionals, educators, students and community leaders. In addition to highlighting scientific advances, we will celebrate our culture and create an accessible space where everyone can feel part of this great conversation about the future of science in Puerto Rico,” highlighted Alicea Torres, who is also a professor at the University of Puerto Rico in Humacao.

In the fortieth edition of the annual convention, topics such as climate change and sustainability, education STEM and innovation, biomedical research and aerospace sciences, among others.

With the presence of AAAS leaders at the national and international level, the convention will take place at the Humacao Fine Arts Center, and will be open – free of charge – to the public..

As part of the event, the results of the Lucy Gaspar Award Call for Excellence in Science Education, aimed at K–12 teachers in the Caribbean, will be announced. Likewise, the competition and awarding of the Robert I. Larus Award for the best poster by graduate students will be held.
