A Blue Guacamayo from Brazil was born in a Belgian zoo, extinct in the wild 25 years ago

The Belgian Zoological Pairi Daiza announced the exceptional birth in its facilities of a blue or spix ara macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii), a parrot originating from the northeastern Brazil cataloged as extinct in the wild for 25 years.

The AVE was born on September 21 at the Conservation Center for Endezed Bird Species in Pairi Daiza, in the southwest of Belgium, where there are twelve of those animals within the framework of an international reproduction program in collaboration with the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (Icmbio) in Brazil and the São Paulo Zoo.

Since his arrival in the park, the macaws have put a hundred eggs, but none of them was fertilized, And it was in the 101º attempt when a chick broke the shell.

“From its birth, this treasure is fed by hand every two hours. Of just 13 grams at birth, today weighs a little more than 30 grams. But its first days remain extremely fragile: each care, each gesture counts to give all the opportunities to survive,” said the zoo on the social network Facebook.

The bird became famous thanks to the Blu character of the cartoon movie “River”added the zoo that described the birth as “a true living miracle.”

The new spix macaw will not be reintroduced in nature, but will become a reproductive bird within the zoo conservation program and will not be exhibited to the public.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) considers the ARA of Spix as extinct in the wild since 2000.
