Lockheed Martin proposes a version of F-16 adapted to the needs of Ukraine that offers greater autonomy and better capabilities to intercept Russian drones and cruise missiles. According to company sources cited by Defense Blog, the proposal is still in a preliminary phase and there are still no concrete negotiations to develop this variant.
The idea has emerged after the meeting that the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskymaintained this Monday in Kyiv with representatives of the American manufacturer. The meeting served to address support for the F-16 and pilot training, while Lockheed Martin seeks to expand its joint projects with Ukraine.
One of the main changes being studied would allow us to overcome a limitation of the devices currently used by the country. The F-16 donated by European NATO members are vintage aircraftmodernized through the mid-life upgrade program, known as Mid-Life Updatewhich they continue to use mechanical scanning radars.
The adaptation would incorporate a active electronic scanning radarknown by the acronym AESAa technology already used by F-16 Block 70. These radars can track more targets at greater distances and better distinguish small, low-flying objects in front of the bottom of the land.
The upgrade would allow pilots detect drones and cruise missiles earlier and more quicklytwo of the main threats they face during Russia’s massive night attacks. This difference results especially relevant for Ukrainewhich uses its fighters to intercept these targets and reinforce its air defense.
In addition to increase autonomyLockheed Martin studies a broader integration of European weaponsincluding guided bombs and cruise missiles. This would give Ukraine more options than the mix of Western munitions currently carried by its F-16s, although sources have not identified which weapons would be prioritized.
The first F-16s arrived in Ukraine in 2024 and have become a centerpiece of its air force. According to Defense Blog, they perform approximately 80% of their departuresand a single F-16 wing, a unit made up of several aircraft, is attributed the shooting down of more than 1,000 Russian Shahed-type drones and cruise missiles.
During the meeting, Zelensky defended the continuity of the program and highlighted its usefulness to protect the country against the arrival of winter. ‘It has worked since the first day the F-16 was used and continues to do so today. Especially with the arrival of a difficult winter, during massive attacks with Shahed, F-16s destroy them. And we have a very good Shahed kill rate. That is why we are very proud to have this capacity. Thank you so much. We count on the program to continue’declared the Ukrainian president.
The meeting also discussed the work so that Ukraine can maintain and repair their F-16s on their own territory. Zelensky also discussed the possibility of receive more interceptors against ballistic missiles for Patriot systemsthe production of which is being increased by Lockheed Martin and of which kyiv hopes to acquire a share.
The sources did not specify how much a Ukraine-specific variant would cost or how many aircraft the project might include. In any case, approval from Washington would be necessary before talks could progress beyond the proposal phase.
